Authentic Slave Shackles Blacksmith made in pre-civil war era.
This item is an authentic set of slave shackles. The link wear and method of construction and patina are in agreement with items from the American historic slavery era prior to the civil war and correspond to sets found in several legal estates and museums. On the lock side of the shackles. The key is a thumbscrew type that is necessary to open and lock the shackle. The opposite end is composed of a chain puzzle type configuration where the shackle is locked by closing the locking link and threading the chain through a locking link that will not open unless the locking screw type end is pulled back through the locking link. Th is u nusual pair of metal restraints is made of heavy black iron. Each individual restraint is intended to hold one wrist and one ankle. So one loop is larger than the oth er. The left and right units can be joined with a bolt or padlock to form a single unit that holds the wrists and ankles together. The individual loops are opened with a he x wrench. Included with the item. I obtained these from an estate sale some years ago as a curiosity and no longer have any use for them. They are extremely strong and heavy. They appear t o be very well made. But they have no manufactu rer's mark and I don't know how old they are.

USMC US Marine Corps antique handcuffs shackles restraints military police
This is a working set of United States marine Cops handcuffs circa turn of the century or older. They do open and close and ratchet. the finish has not been tampered with. No sandblasting or wire wheeling. A good bit of the original finish is intact but there is some surface tarnish and some corrosion as one might expect with something this age. These were common in wild west jails, sheriffs departments, prisons etc. In this case I assume these were military police since they are marked USMC. there is no manufacturers name as I would guess these ere made under military contract. They could be from a military prison or military prisoner transport facility. My pop had these in his estate he was in the ATS before WW2 and collected various restraints as he dealt with prisoners of war before the US entered ww2. Late 18th early 19th Century Slave Shackles Up for your bidding consideration is this original set of shackles used in the slave trade during the"Middle Passage" from Africa to the Americas. A truly grizzly relic of a dark time in our nation's history. Images of shackles such as this appear in numerous abolitionist books. As well as collections focusing on the practices and history of slavery. Originally being crafted in Africa. Shackles such as these were made to bind the leggings of captives. The ring on the end of the bar would have been made secure by a wood peg. Locks were not used due to the large volume of shackles being used, coupled with the fact hands were usually bound as well. Pitting and oxidation consistant with age, I've left them in their original condition. Here is a nice matching pair of Campbell Screw Pin 1 inch Shackles. This includes 2 one inch shackles each with a working weight limit of 8 and one half tons each. I did not attempt to do any cleaning on these. They are in great shape, almost all the original paint is still on them and the threads are perfect, no bends or distortions, the two weigh in a little over 10 pounds. I was a Crane Operator for over 20 years so I am quite familiar with quality shackles. I will be listing more shackles and hooks and other load handling items in the next few days.
