Thermo SmartION 2140R Ion Chamber Radiation Detector Geiger Counter Ludlum
Up for auction is a SmartION 2140R ion chamber. This unit is in very good shape. The unit measures background accurately and also responds to sources as seen in the pics. There is also a barcode reader that allows the user to log the reading at set locations. I have not used this barcode reader so it's functionality is unknown. The back-light works perfectly. There is also an alarm feature that allows the user to set a specific limit that the detector will alarm out at to alert the user. Which also works. There is a sliding shield that allows the user to choose between whether gamma only or gamma+beta particles will be detected. This shield can be seen in the photos opened and closed. There is an indicator on the meter face that shows whether only gamma or gamma+beta are being detected. Batteries will be included. This unit new is over ... more$4k. This is a Ludlum model 12 radiation rate meter with: an Eberline HP-270 energy compensated GM detector. A Ludlum"C to C" cable. an adapter. C to BNC. It powers up. Responds to a check source, and there is no corrosion in the battery compartment. It has definitely been used. Some paint has been scraped off. And there is an appreciable amount of adhesive on the device. The cable works. But no one should consider a second hand cable to be reliable or as durable as a new one. The HP-270 has a BNC connector. The adapter will allow you to use it with a standard Ludlum"C to C" cable. NMGRT will be added if it is shipped to an address in New Mexico. Or is picked up.

High Voltage was adjusted to ~800V for use with a Ludlum 243 and detector exposure to a Co-60 source for 30 second counts was compared to an Ortec 113 preamp/590A main Amp with the same detector and got virtually identical counts(image#7) although the meter on the 2200 under-read the voltage somewhat. This unit was sent to Ludlum, but the cost to calibrate it seemed too high to justify. I have a PDF of the manual for this particular model and can send. Ludlum Geiger counter scintillator probe
This probe came in a lot of university surplus equipment. I cannot read the model# on the Ludlum tag. But someone had used a marker to label it 44-3 and I believe this is accurate. READ CAREFULLY: I tested this probe on a Ludlum Model 3 GM counter against a shielded uranium ore sample and it easily detected gamma radiation(and seems very sensitive) but it has a problem: When moving the probe around, it will often apparently short and peg the meter. Perhaps a wire or component is shorting out against the probe body or a wire is loose. If I moved the probe or shook it lightly it would correct itself and begin performing correctly. If you are an electronics tech or are handy this might be an easy fix. I have not messed with it at all, figuring if I tried to take it apart I might make it worse. I do simple things like soldering and changing GM ... moretubes, but I've never gotten into the guts of a scintillator and figure that's a notch or two above my skill level. There is no guarantee on this and no returns, but I'm starting this auction at a buck with cheap shipping. Good luck!
