It was titled"Who Made The Ladder? and it was written by Arthur Koehler(who is pictured in the photo at the bottom of the first page) as told to Boyden Sparkes. The Lindberg Baby Kidnapping and Murder was the Trial of the Century at the time and received world-wide attention. This article was published shortly after the trial(and conviction) of Bruno Hauptmann who would be later be executed for the crime. The article gives fascinating details of how Koehler utilized his expertise in wood forensics to conclusively tie Hauptmann to the ladder that was left behind at the Lindberg house and which ultimately played such a key role ... morein producing the guilty verdict against Hauptmann. 11th Regiment Michigan Volunteer Cavalry J. K. Ennes Badge named to J. K. Ennes of Company"C" Records show that a Jacob K. Ennis. Age 21, of Kalamazoo enlisted in Company C of the 11th Regiment. Difference in spelling probably due to transcription error from original records. The badge name is most likely the correct one. The regiment was mustered in on December 10. 1863 and then proceeded to Eastern Kentucky. Unit was active in KY, TN and VA and participated in the pursuit of Morgan's command and the battle at Cynthiana, KY. By 1865 it was serving in NC, capturing the cavalry escort of Jefferson Davis among the many actions. Consolidated with the 8th Michigan Cavalry on July 20, 1865 and mustered out. LOT DESCRIPTION: Fresh from a very old collection. And initially purchased at a swap meet in July of 1958, is this totally authentic and completely untouched nickel metal Civil War veteran's“ladder& shield” combination badge worn by Pvt. Joseph Thorn of Co. E of the 110th Ohio Infantry. Badge measures overall approximately 1.75 inches across and 2.75 inches tall with deep. Magnificent character stampings throughout. The very top suspension bears a soldered brass coil pin, while the bottom shield portion is emblazoned with not only the soldier's name, but also a rendering of his 6th Army Corps Badge, a Greek cross, which still retains most of its original dark blue paint, as indicative of the 3rd Division. Joseph Thorn enlisted in the 110th Ohio Infantry at age 18 on August 21st, 1862, as a Private and was mustered out of Co. EXC! Ladder badge with ribbon for Co C. 46th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Excellent condition. Original veteran's ladder badge with ribbon for a former member of Company C, 46th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Unit has GREAT war record! This regiment was organized at Worthington. From Oct. 23, 1861, to Jan. 28, 1862, to serve for three years. It was sent to the field from Camp Chase in Feb. 1862, with an aggregate of 975 men, and reported at Paducah, Ky. It was engaged during the entire battle of Shiloh, with a loss of 280 killed and wounded, and 15 captured. It remained upon that field until April 27, when it moved with the army upon Corinth. Early in June, 1863, it was transported to Vicksburg and participated in the siege of that place. In the campaign against Jackson, Miss. the regiment suffered greatly from heat and the scarcity of water. At ... morethe battle of Missionary ridge it was engaged severely and sustained a heavy loss in killed and wounded. Immediately after this battle the regiment moved on the Knoxville campaign, and having raised the siege of that place marched to Scottsboro, Ala. for winter quarters. There it veteranized and after its furlough home, returned to camp. On May 1, 1864, it moved in the direction of Chattanooga and thence by way of Snake Creek gap to Resaca where it was actively engaged for three days, but with slight loss. In two engagements at Dallas the Spencer rifles of the regiment caused such havoc in the charging columns, that ever after the 46th was known and dreaded throughout the opposing army. In the assault at Kennesaw Mountain the regiment captured 60 prisoners, but its own loss in killed and wounded was severe. The regiment was en- gaged in skirmishing about Atlanta until July 22, when it assisted in repelling an attack on the 17th corps. From this time it was constantly engaged in skirmishing and participated in Sherman's flank movement to Jonesboro.
