This is a vintage Elkhart Brass Fire Hydrant Water Thief Splitter Valve 3-way for fire hose. Inlet is 3 inches with two 1 ½ inch outlet connections. Unit is old and has seen some wear but it still functions as designed and should make a good piece for your collection OR a working unit for your fire arrangements. This unit is heavy and appears to be stainless coated brass. You are bidding on the unit in the photo and the number shown is only to assist us in identifying which unit we are selling. In 1807 a major advance in fire hose was made by two American firemen from Philadelphia's Hose Company 1 who experimented by using metal rivets instead of stitching to bind the seams of leather hose. Their efforts paid off and became a huge success.Leather hose still had many drawbacks. Including drying out, cracking and bursting from excessive pressure. The introduction of rivets, however, allowed higher pressures and greater delivery of water on the fire ground. The improved hose now was 40 to 50 feet in length and weighed more than 85 pounds with the couplings. The next improvement came in 1821. When James Boyd received a patent for rubber-lined, cotton-webbed fire hose. By 1871, the Cincinnati Fire Department was using the B.F. Goodrich Company's new rubber hose reinforced with cotton ply. It is 53” long with a carrying handle loop. This leather hose has been sold for over $100 a foot in the past. This length is still pliable and has a spot where it ruptured under pressure. Great antique A. Scrader's Son Inc. brass fire hose nozzle. It's got some dings from usage and age. So please look closely at the pictures. This is marked with the"A. Schrader's Sons Inc. marking, even though parts of it are worn off. They mostly made diving helmets, but did venture into other areas. This piece measures 10 1/2" long by 2 1/2" in diameter at the fitter opening and 1" at the end. A young mechanic named August Schrader. Arrived in New York in 1840 from Hamburg Germany.
