These coated-lens binoculars with 8-power magnification have an Objective Lens Effective Diameter of 40 mm and FOV of 6.5 degrees. Offering good clarity and detail. The diopter adjustment is +2 and-3. These"Sportster" Model binoculars are good for both wildlife viewing and bird watching(8-power binoculars are popular among birders) as well as observing sports, and would be adequate for the beginning star-gazer. The body of these binoculars is in very good condition. Entirely free of any marks or scratches. The only thing to comment on is that the ... morefoil label on the axle that certifies that the binoculars have been inspected by, and comply with, the export standards of the Japanese Telescope Inspection Institute has been mostly removed, leaving only the backing(photo#1) The JL marks are present, incised into the binocular's body, JE9 for the metalwork manufacturer, and JB206 for Fujita Koki Seisakuio Inc. Tokyo, designating the manufacturer of the finished product. The JL marks and the inspection label were part of a rigorous government system set up in 1959 to ensure that only top quality binoculars were exported from Japan. One of the eyepiece lens caps is missing. And the covering on the case is lifting at the seams on the bottom and the right side(photos#9& 10) There is some minor wear showing on the surface of the metal latching mechanism of the case(photo#8) and on the inside of the mount for the clasp(photo#7) and a crack part way through the inside coating of the adjustable strap(no photo- didn't find this until after the photos were taken) Other than these minor items, I can see no condition issues with these binoculars and case. The metal pieces have the underlying brass peeking throughh in a couple of areas where the black paint was smoothed off. The leather wrap is generally in good shape with some wear. on left front approx. 90% whole. Was liberated by American soldier and sent home to his family. WW1 Era Megaphos Stereo Prism Binoculars. Paris
8 power stereo prism binoculars by Megaphos of Paris. From what I could find online. These were made from the early 1900's up to the end of WW1. The leather covering is badly worn and missing in some places. It looks like the construction is a mixture of brass and steel. The eyepieces I believe are wood. Everything is tight on them. All moving parts move freely and smoothly. I don't see any fogging on the lenses. It has a leather strap thats obviously old. But I don't know if it's original. These items come from groups found at auctions and estate sales. And may require some cleaning. I have no way of determining if they've been exposed to pets and/or tobacco. Items are stored in containers outside my home to prevent any cooking or pet odors from reaching them. Things exposed to pets, cooking or tobacco before I receive ... morethem I have no control over. The se vintage binoculars fold out and extend& also the middle extension moves back& forth to adjust for distance- the compass& large glass lenses measure 1 5/8" in diameter. The smaller 2 glass lenses measure 11/16" in diameter. is 3 5/8" overall length. Opened- the lenses are not scratched or chipped& there are no cracks in the c elluloid- uncleaned& unpolished. As found- no damage, no repairs, no restoration- excellent condition- old& genuine.
