What we have here is an instrument to measure the apparent resistivity of the ground. There are many widely different arrangements and equipment available to do this. This device falls under the method known as Gish- Rooney after the pair who devised it in 1925. The measure of resistivity in the field of geophysics is one of the oldest methods. This meter was probably made in the late 1950's to early 1960's. The Gish-Rooney meter is similar to an instrument called a Megger which was developed primarily for the use of power and communications companies to test the grounds of power stations and transmission towers. The Gish-Rooney meter measures the current and voltage separately to obtain the apparent resistivity which is somewhat more accurate than the Megger and more suitable to geophysical surveys. Baroid Resistivity Meter for testing of Oil Drilling Mud 1959 by Nat'l Lead Co.
A thrift store find this Baroid Resistivity Meter seems to work just like it should. I couldn't easily come up with a new battery- the one it came with is dead- but I used a 9 volt in series with my 12 volt car battery and found the unit to work as I would expect it to. Filled with bottled drinking water the meter went to near full scale on the high resistance side. Once a little salt was added it showed a resistivity level of about 2. The first picture shows the test results using the salt water solution. The new owner will have to purchase a new battery to be able to use the unit. Although new at eBay. I have the help of a friend who has sold over 400 items with a 100% positive feedback rating before stopping due to health concerns. AC resistance between the tip and body of rod is determined by balancing bridge and soil resistivities in Ohms-cc read direct on the dial. Tektronix TM504 with SG 502 Oscillator and Mobil 8219 Resistivity Meter
This TM504 Power Module frame includes a Tektronix SG 502 oscillator. And a resisitivity meter model 8219 made by Mobil. The SG 502 power light is burned out, but the oscillator still works well. I connected the two outputs to an oscilloscope and observed that they produced the correct outputs. I do not have any documentation on the Mobil 8219 meter, so it is untested, but powers up and the display lights as shown in the photos. I also measured the power module backplane voltages with an oscilloscope and they are producing the proper voltages and properly filtered.
