This item is in good condition with some minor cosmetic wear from normal use. There are a few minor scuff marks and scratches that do not effect the functionality of the item. The glass gauge is in good condition with no cracks or chips. The internal parts are in good condition with no dents or cracks. Please refer to the photos below for more details on the item. We connected this item to an external power source and the light came on immediately. We then connected the gauge connections to another power source and we were able to test various voltages. Here is one of two great Leeds& Northrup Co. 2239E Galvanometers I recently found at an estae sale of a long time South Dakota State University professor. This appears complete with the two bakelite connecting knobs.The internal gold wires appear to remain connected. It has not been tested. The pictures show the condition. Usage/History The reflecting galvanometer is a sensitive instrument for measuring current. It consists of a magnet coil with an attached mirror suspended between the poles of a magnet by a thin gold ribbon above and a coiled gold wire below. When an electric current is introduced into the magnet coil it induces a magnetic field. Causing the coil to rotate in proportion to the current. The mirror allows the user to see very small deflections, and thus to measure very small currents, by observing a distant reflected scale(one ... moremeter or more away) through a telescope. The ballistic galvanometer is specialized in having a wide coil characterized by a long period. It is designed to measure the quantity of electricity(charge) discharged through the instrument over a short period of time. Applications include the measurement of capacitance. Inductance by comparison with a standard, and magnetic field intensities using a search coil. Description L&N Type P. Ballistic, student grade moving coil reflecting galvanometer, serial number 730967. The meter consists of a 7 1/8 by 4 5/8 by 7/8" magnet covered by a bakelite plate with a center 1 3/4 by 3 3/8" window and with a hollow suspension post of nickel plated brass(4 1/4 by 3/8" on top. The L&N logo is in raised letters against a black polished region on the diamond stippled background of the bakelite cover. There are raised polished borders around the edge and the window. Unit has names and marking dating back to 1926. The unit itself was later calibrated later in 1938. The exterior is made of nice wood. The shell can use some refinishing. I’m not sure what it was used for other than calibration condensers by Leeds& Northrup. All of the parts appears to be present. This item is defiantly one of a kind. I have seen no others like it listed nor can I find a lot of information about it on line. We got this from the plant closing sale of a jet engine repair facility. Range is 0-2500 deg. F. Picture 2 shows it measuring the temperature in my shop and picture 3 shows the effect of a match on the thermocouple. This was the cool box back in my power plant days in the 70’s. Embedded in the center of the tray is a very unique brass medal. The front side of the medal reads"MARIA.ANNA.AUGUSTA.FERDINANDI.I.IMP.ET.REGIS" with a portrait of Her. The rear side of the medal reads"ET.ALTERA.MIHI.PATRIA" CORON.PRAGUE.MENSE.SEPT.MDCCCXXXVI" with a few different symbols. The tray itself is stamped Stainless from Italy.
