According to research, this recording is probably the 1896 n o. 11038 Columbia-issued version of the speech. With Len Spencer orating. While the importance and popularity of Bryan's speech and controversy ... moresurrounding the Gold Standard(which is the subject of the speech) led many smaller independent recording companies to produce their own versions, given the cylinder is a Columbia mold with a single spiral in the core and the recording is very well done with a voice that sounds to be Len Spencer orating, this is more than likely the Columbia production. Given the rarity of this piece, audio of a documented Columbia recording could not be sourced to compare to this particular recording. Also. It should be noted that t his cylinder was discovered in a lot of period Brown wax recordings. Further indicating its authenticity. The recording itself is very clean. It has a beautiful sheen and displays only one shallow needle dig. There is one small light spot visible in photos that looks like a mold spot but displays as a discoloration more than deterioration. The audio is clear and exciting. The record comes with a period brown pasteboard cylinder box and original cotton batting. For preservation purposes it is best to keep this cylinder outside of the cotton batting as this cushioning harbors mold which over time destroys these fragile recordings. This is a used hydraulic cylinder about 20 inch stroke. 1 1/8" pins, 24 inch total length and the piston is 1 1/2 inch. The rod is broken on the end and needs to be welded back on. Someone tried it and, it didn't hold so, it needs redone right! I will ship it but it would be cheeper to pick it up in Arcade NY about 40 miles south of Buffalo. This was on a case trencher articulating cylinder. There is a pump with it, the pump has a 5/8 shaft, I don't know if it works.
