Up for your consideration is this rather rare larger than normal de-rigging cannonball. This cannonball had one purpose and one purpose only. And that was to take out masts and rigging on the enemy's ship. Residing in one of the oldest parts of the country.Salem MA,vintage military items such as this show up once in awhile. To quote one of my favorite sayings"You never Know" I would date this one around the mid to late 1700's to the early 1800's. I'm not sure if this cannonball is English or American.There are no identifying marks on it. The beer bottle is being used as a size comparison reference guide only.It is not part of the auction. The late 18th century saw the development of a new class of cannon. The Carronade, which fired the standard size cannonballs but had a shorter barrel and lighter weight. This is a WWII era military rigging knife. The main blade is stamped Jacobs co. Sheffield. This knife measures 4 3/4 inches overall. It has seen a lot of use. And is in no way pristine. This knife was purchased at the estate sale of a local veteran who I knew personally, and who served in the US navy during WWII. Although the family would not part with any of the treasured service items, this was found in his wood shop.
