2 very similar small Norfolk thumb latches. The latches are 6 1/2" and 6 3/4" long. They have decorative slightly different upper cusps. The handles are covered with nicely turned pewter handles. One of the pewter covered handles has been buffed so that the handle is slightly shiney. The thumb pieces are original and are 2" and 2 1/8" long. The latch bars are period and are 4 1/2" long. 2 very similar Norfolk thumb latches with pewter turnings on the handles. These latches are early 19th century. They are 7 3/4" long. I currently have several other Norfolk latches of this form-they are not readily available. I think I may have one other one listed. These 2 are very close together in the way they look. I have probably had more Norfolk latches with the entire handle being covered with pewter than just the center section an these are. They are both in great condition no rust or pitting to speak of. One of the thumb pieces is original- and one is a wrought reproduction replacement-both about 2 3/4" The latch bars are period and are 5 1/2" long. The keepers and staples are wrought reproductions. I’m listing this antique gray graniteware long thumb scoop that is made by(and stamped) L& G(LaLance& Grosjean) Mfg. Co. Agate Nickel-Steel Ware. It has great shine and mottling& overall is near mint condition. Thereis tip rust and scraping on the bowl below the handle. The main scoop- or"bowl" is 6" long and 3 1/4" at its widest. The handle extends 1 1/2" and the bowl is about 1" deep. This piece has only a faint stamp and it is more simple than most pieces- in a blue oval there is a hard to see L& G Co. I've tried to point it out in the picture. But I don't think it's visible. I have another, so I know it's a L& G. I’ve used copies of an old L& G ad to serve as a reference. In the late 1800’s LaLance& Grosjean’s agateware(also called graniteware or stamped enamelware) ... morewas one of the more“expensive” In the 1900’s they made wares for Sears. Made of red bronze. about 9 inches long, they are unpolished, having a shine only on the contact areas[handle and thumb latch] and showing off the nice warm worn patina. no damage at all, though the"dummy" handle is missing its thumb latch. the last 2 pics attempt to show the patented date under the thumb-latch of May 1880 K-38-First of all. In the 2009 Edition of Yeomen's Redbook alone. There are over 30 different"varieties" of Lincoln Cents noted since 1959. Most of these are fairly minor varieties such as large or small dates, or"close" AM's. While these are all very interesting– the collector has to know what they are looking for to make a find. They would not be obvious to the uninformed person. Obvious"extra appendage-type" varieties of Lincoln Cents are relatively rare. The 1984"doubled-ear" ... morecaused quite a stir at the time. And is currently listed in the Redbook for $250, and are currently selling for $150-200 each. There are likely other obscure varieties as well– but these will be less-known to the average collector. Now I'm not suggesting the"six-fingered" varieties will be a $100+ coin in 10 years. But I do believe it will have a significant place in Lincoln Cent history. It is said there are"too many" of these DDR sub-varieties in 2009 for real significance– and that may be partially true. But there are about 3-5 of these varieties that are both significant in ease of IDENTITY and in sufficient QUANTITY that many average collectors can own. Varieties of Significant Interest The following are personal observations I am sharing based on the 200+ US Mint LP2 Mint boxes I have searched and tabulated. CDDR refers to Crawford attribution. Some small dents and dings on the top plates(see image 7 for closeup) There is some rust showing on the steel parts. Unfortunately, the previous owner'modified' the left(front shifter) side mounting clamp after stripping the clamp bolt threads, and drilled a thru hole to accept a bolt and nut, with rather poor workmanship. The shifters click into SIS mode, or friction mode, but have not been throroughly tested on the road to see if they hold a gear.
