It also has some pitting and rust towards the last half of the blade. The knuckle guard and pommel do wiggle. The brass scabbard shows wear(especially towards the throat) and it has a few dents. Up for auction this week is another fine example of antique Tonsorial Tools by one of the most prolific German cutters of his time ERN of Wald Germany. This is one of the bigger Crown and Sword razors have ever seen at just a sha d e under 7/8th inch wide is heavy. Anyone who has ha d any experience with C&S 1166 razors will notice the" 5/ at the end of the etching, we are unsure what it mean s. Perhaps a model by special dispensation, but I have never seen another like it. Everything on this blade is bright and clean. Frosted Etching on the front face is is bright and clear proudly displaying“CROWN& SWORD Extra Hollow Ground” There are the traditional file cuts at the upper and lower of the tang for sure grip when stropping or shaving(a sign of Hi-Quality cutlery) Scales are perfect original black Bakelite with the embossed ... moremotif of a curved Sword on the front. The scales they are straight and hold the blade firmly and centers when closed. This razor is crisp and clean. Not used much at all as there is very little sharpening were on the spine, bevels are thin and well defined so maintenance will be very easy, you will be hard pressed to find another Crown& Sword in such pretense condition. Very fine interesting Balkans Yataghan wootz blade, silver mounts, script inlays
A very fine Balkan yataghan sword.Possibly Bulgarian in origin, with a wootz blade and inscriptions, silver fittings and a high quality scabbard. A lovely example. The classic recurving blade measures 66cm x 4cm at its widest point. There is a central wootz band over which silver inlaid text and decorative motifs have been applied. Of particular interest are the numerous small'tulip head' designs. Something we've never before seen. Towards the hilt there is a series of markings that look like Gregorian numerals and if read upside down. Could be said to be 1193 which translates to 1779 in the Islamic calendar. Just our observation and these characters may be just part of the text, but given the often mixed markings on Balkans weapons due to the fluidic cultural nature of the region, we though it best mentioned. The hilt slabs are ... morehorn. Well secured with three rivets, the strap and bolster are made of tooled silver. The scabbard looks totally original to the sword and is very well made of sturdy hide over wood. The metal work is steel. And interestingly the lower mount/ foot has been punch decorated. The scabbard has been stitched along the back using brass wire, something often found on weapons coming from Crete, Greece or mainland Turkey. In the hand a well balanced and work like weapon. Definitely a fighting piece and made to the highest standards throughout. Condition: Generally very good. The blade is clean and free from any deep pitting. There are some grey patches but nothing terrible-a professional clean would enhance this blade. There are a couple of very very minor nicks to the blade. In some places there is loss to the inlays but the the designs are simple enough to restore if so wanted and the cut outs are clearly defined. The strap has lifted above the horn along the centre of the hilt, but its all firm with only the tiniest of movement and again could be restored by skilled hands. For sale is a Japanese Tachi. The sword is in nice condition for its age. The scabbard is wooden with a very unique and beautiful lacquer pattern and fittings. There are some nicks and a crack in the lacquer at one seam but the scabbard is solid. Usually these tachi fittings are missing the leather ashi fittings. All fittings are here and are very nice. One of the leather ashi shows age. The handle and wrap is tight and in nice original condition. The length is about 41 inches overall with a 26 inch cutting edge. The blade is bright and in nice shape and signed Hidetoshi. Some small stains and what appears to be some length wise scratches from going in and out of the scabbard? The sword is signed on one side and not dated. This is a very unique and rare sword and fittings.
