Curious Vintage English Slit Lamp Biomicroscope Made in the 1920-30s. With Electric Light Original ophthalmological instrument made in London(England) in the 1920-30s. It is an slit lamp biomicroscope. A diagnostic instrument to exam the anterior structures of the eye under high magnification. This particular instrument is an attractive and interesting vintage machine, with long years of use and that has survived to our days in quite good condition. All the parts and components are original. The biomicroscope is made of brass except for some silvery or lacquered metal pieces. And the support for the patient’s chin, which is made of brown bakelite. The metal shows some signs of wear but is well preserved; these signs are part of the instrument’s“life” and provide it with an attractive touch of charm. The electric wiring is in good condition ... morethough only one light works. The lenses have not been checked and the rest of the pieces move fluidly and softly. The instrument was made by Hamblin. A London firm, and we can figure this out from the copper plate screwed to the instrument´s base where we can see the inscription HAMBLIN– LONDON and the serial number 620/417 printed in the metal. The word Hamblin is also engraved in both lenses(with 5 magnifications each) together with the number 635/439, and in the eyepiece. This word probably refers to Coton and Hamblin Optometrists, a firm that is currently operating in several parts of Londons. Coton and Hamblin was founded in 1903. This wonderful ítem will surely be the focus of any collection of curious machines or scientific instruments from the early 20th century. This is perhaps the most unusual antique lantern I have ever owned. I have researched far and wide for info on this critter and have come up with various pieces of“Oh. That’s a” all of which I take with reservations. The most common historical data that seems to surface the most is that it is a lamp that was created in England during World War ll for use during bombing raids where any visible light would inform the enemy of your location. The lamps stands 8” tall and the base is 4. The“slit” in the front cover would provide just enough light to assure one of safe footing, and that you were afoot and moving when others were traveling as well, but not enough to establish one’s location. And when the“slit” was not needed the front snap cover could be lowered and have full candle light to be used as a pseudo flashlight with a glass protective ... morecover remaining in place. The small quarter size hinged covered aperture on the lantern’s left side would be for lighting the candle. The very substantial handle has a convenient keyhole for hanging securely on a wall. This was my best slit lamp I used in my long career of fitting rigid contact lenses. That is even comparing it optically to even the Haag Streiht. The bulb even has a fan which makes them last longer. It has the stronger eye magnifiers with it also. I will also include a box of several bulbs for it and for other equipment like keratometers. By the way it will also come with this electric table and they both work great. This lamp also has bottom plate on it to use if you would rather have it on your chair stand and then have the electric table for other equipment.
