Correspondence of Heinrich"Hank" Heine. Jr. A large collection of approximately 100 letters. Cards, photos, and newspaper clippings mailed to his girlfriend and eventual fiancé, Mariam Young, from 1933-1936. Both were under age 25 at the time of this correspondence. Hank and Mariam met in Maine in 1933, shortly before Hank left for Chicago to work as a chimney builder for his father's(Heinrich R. Heine) company, the Heine Chimney Company. The resulting correspondence documents the couple's early courtship through their early engagement, providing a glimpse into the mechanics, hardships, and joys of a long-distance love affair in 1930s America. Mariam was a student at the beginning of the correspondence and a Teacher in Maine by its close. Though Hank occasionally tried to persuade her to pursue Nursing. As a chimney ... morebuilder, Hank traveled the United States extensively, mostly by car and sometimes by train, to construct giant industrial chimneys, smoke stacks and silos, and reported the dangers(heights) and doldrums(weather delays) of his job in detail. Naturally, he includes his triumphs as well, including his promotion to Superintendent, and eventually junior partner of the company. In 1935, Hank matriculated to Northwestern University for Engineering. He continued to run jobs for his father's company all over the country, while maintaining a full course of study and a position in the university's naval R.O.T.C. Hank's letters to Mariam run the emotional gamut, from cool and calculating, to humble and self-deprecating, but always kind and respectful, though perhaps by modern standards slightly paternal, but still consistent with gender expectations of their time. The correspondence ends as Hank is embarking on his second year of school.
