ANTIQUE EARLY - MID 19th C.CLEAR CRYSTAL BEAKER W/HANDPAINTED ENAMEL & GOLD TRM
This small beaker has a delicate and very aesthetic decoration and the glass is very thin as well. It measures 3 1/2" 8.9 cm) in height. 2 1/2" 6.3 cm) in diameter at the mouth(or top) and 2" 5 cm) in diameter at the bottom. It features delicate gold rings at the top with four"curtain" type swags evenly spaced around the top with white raised enamel dots and white flowers with a coral center. There are four gold"drop tassels" between each swag. There are two larger swags below with gold leaves, stems and the repeated white and coral enamel flowers. The white and coral are raised enameling, the gold trim is not. The gold is worn in places which is what you expect to see in a piece of this age. There is a recessed, slightly textured pontil on the bottom. Even though the beaker looks round, it has nine sides ... moreat the bottom that fade away as you look towards the rim. There are no seams in the glass. The beaker has a great"ring" when flicked with a finger and"hums" when you run your finger around the rim. This piece probably dates to some time between 1830 in 1850. There is a $1.00 charge for a new box within a larger new box and ample packing material to ensure safe delivery. I have seen this referred to as a lidded stein or deckelhumpen but I am really not sure if that is a correct name for this form. The covered jar features a seated king with foo dog type figures on both sides of his thrown. He is surrounded by other king like figures and pope/ cardinal type figures. Each of the figures is holding at least one object- a scepter. Sword, chalice, key. There are also crests& seals. A floral bouquet is opposite the seated king- an interesting contrast to the figures. Solid Silver Beaker Riga Latvia Andreas Brachfeldt 17th C. 1690
This is a very large solid silver beaker made by Andreas Brachfedlt in Riga Latvia c. 1690. Brachfeldt became a master silversmith in 1661 and died sometime after 1695. It is parcel-gilt but most of the gilding is worn off. This would be a museum quality piece(a piece of this silversmith’s work is in the Cleveland Museum of Art) except for some damage. The oval monogram which begins with an A(I can’t read the rest) is a later addition. The original oval was buffed off. The silver was thinned and this later monogram was added probably in the 18 th or 19 th century. At that time a pin sized hole was pierced through the silver. The other two ovals with flowers in them are no doubt original as it is typical decoration for Baltic silver. So what can be done? If you are not going to drink out of it. Turn the later monogram to the wall and ignore ... moreit. If you want to drink out of it, you will have to plug the hole, by either putting a little glue in it, or having it soldered. In any case if this piece had the original oval it would bring around $10,000 at auction, so I am selling this item at a very low price. It holds about 20 oz. of liquid. The Arnhemsche Faïencefabriek has been one of the leading factories of GOUDA Pottery. Founded in 1903 by the famous brothers Jacob and Klaas Vet who were educated at the Brantjes factory in Purmerend and Distel in Amsterdam. Their company produced beautiful ornamental pottery. After a fire in 1906 the factory was restarted in Arnhem and there they developed their own characteristic ... morestyle. Unfortunately Klaas drowned on one of his study trips to England and Jacob had to sell the factory. His dismissal by the new owners caused an exodus of painters to the newly opened GELRIA and RAM Pottery. In 1928(the year of the Gouda Strikes) the factory closed its doors, but the official expiration year is 1933. The Marantha decoration was inspired by Persian patterns. This vase is marked at the bottom with underglazed factory marks: ARNHEM HOLLAND MARANTHA and a painters initial M.A.intertwined) and mould# 199 AGE: 1920-1925 DIMENSIONS: Height is 8 inches. This lovely little item is a vintage collapsible cup or tumbler with a decorative. Embossed li d. It measures 2 1/2" across and. Fully extended, is 3" in height. It is stamped on the base as'Made in the USA' with what I guess is a patent date of 1897. It i s in good condition. Opens and extends firmly. It does, however. Have scratching and wear to the base and tarnish- it would look better after a polish. Decorative and useful. It would make a great addition to any collection of vintage items.
