LATE 18TH EARLY 19TH CENTURY LINEN & SILK TREE OF LIFE SAMPLER C.1790
Late 18th/early 19th century linen and silk work sampler. Though undated. The type of linen used and the style of stitching would indicate that it dates to around 1798 or a few years either side. This sampler is an absolute gem! The central section is decorated with an absolutely superb Tree of Life complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve on each side. The branches are laden with fruit. and all around the tree are the family initials. Above the tree are the following words from Ecclesiastes 12 and Proverbs 8.17 Remember now thy creator in the days of thy youth while the evil days come not nor the years draw nigh. When they shalt say I have no pleasure in them I love them that love me and those that seek me early shall find me Beneath the tree is a central motif of a tree with two dogs beneath and two of the most wonderful motifs of ... moredeer I have ever seen. The whole thing is surrounded by an intricate floral border. The style of motifs on this sampler are very unusual and I've not seen deer stitched in this way before- the whole thing is charming. The linen has slight overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the silks are good with some slight bleeding around the red of the border. There is also a row of purple woolen stitching along the top edge. The sampler is stitched onto a backing cloth and I will be shipping it this way. These 2 pretty and unusual jewelry displays are a rich Bronze tone. They are metal. But it must be a mixture, because they are very sturdy, but not too heavy. They affix flush to the wall with 2 keyhole screw slides. Once mounted. The branches sprout out from the wall to hold all your necklaces and bracelets. They hold a lot! Because they have all sorts and lengths of branches, so they are many many places to hang your pretty treasures so they can be seen and appreciated. One is 8.5" tall with a spread of 5" At the highest point. It comes away from the wall about 4" The other is about 7" Tall with a spread of about 7.5" It comes out from the wall about 3.5" I had them hung on either side of a mirror in my bedroom. Beautiful bird with orange head decorated with yellow dots running from the front to the back of head. Belly is golden yellow and the wings are rusty red and orange. He is sitting on a black tree with yellow and green flowers. There is a streak across the back indicating the vase has been damaged and glued. It was this way when I got it but this is not obvious from the front. This wall vase measures approximately 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. Posted with
