Old Antique Brass Water Depth Sounder? Lure Recovery Tool? Mystery item
Here's an interesting mystery item I've had for sometime now. No one seems to be really sure about what it is. One old timer said that it is a tool tied to the end of a rope so that fisherman. Lobsterman or boats in shallow water could determine the depth using this tool tied to the end of a small coil of rope. Sort of like the"mark twain" story about sounding the depth of the river water on the old time riverboats. That would seem to be a possibility but could also be totally wrong. A helpful ebayer indicated that the item is too small to be a depth sounder and suggests it is an old fisherman's tool used to try and recover a lure that is caught on something underwater. This piece has a body of brass and by looking at the bottom it appears to have some other type of metal insert inside.
