U-boat escape apparatus Draeger tauchretter with goggles and oxygen bottle .
You are bidding on one of the rarest Kriegsmarine item one can own. An original German World War Two draeger tauchretter escape apparatus! This is a brownish color rubberized canvas vest that was used as a life jacket and when used under water as a rebreather to escape from sunken u-boats. The vest is in beautiful condition with no rips or repairs that I can see. Just some minor age soiling on the fabric. This, in my opinion would be an excellent display piece and would be very hard to upgrade from this. Though this was designed by the draeger firm this tauchretter was made by Auer as a sub contractor and has a faint black ink stamp Auer logo. See pictures for the logo stamp, KM acceptance stamp with the eagle and faint serial or work order number. This auction is for the canvas vest. Steel oxygen bottle, bottom spring clamp to seal the tauchretter ... moreand the all important and rarest part the mouth piece with rubber hose. There is no scrubber can with this auction as they were made from steel with a caustic soda lime mixture that ate away the metal over the years! The rubber goggles are somewhat stiff and hard with cracking in several areas, I think they would look good laying flat on display. Frail but original draeger goggles! The steel oxygen bottle was very rusty on the outside and has been repainted blue. The valve knob works and you can screw open and closed. The crotch strap is most interesting as this has a pressed on stamped sheet metal end tab to prevent fraying. This type of tab was used only for a very short time before eliminating the metal tab and just dipping the end of the crotch strap in some type of shellack. This tauchretter is from the Joetauchretter collection and this very same vest can be seen on the web site joe-tauchretter.tripod I do not think you will a nicer tauchretter!
