Civil War Era Surgical Bone Saw. For amputation. Nice. Constructed of steel and abony wood. Size: 10 5/8 inches long by 1 inch wide at the widest point. Nice hand checkered ebony wood handles attach to the saw by 2 small pins. Very small check from age(drying out) where handle meets back of saw blade. Not really noticeable. And does not effect the display or function of the piece. The blade is stained. But shows no heavy rust or pitting. Should clean up fine! Overall nice condition. LONDON" a prominent British surgical instrument maker. These lancets were used to open a vein to drain blood from patients in an effort at curing various ailments. This"bloodletting" was a common practice in early medicine. This small lancet is photographed with an illustration of how the thumb lancet was held during the opening of the patient's vein. The lancet measures only 2 1/4 inches closed. With both sides of the tortoise sides pivoting to reveal the blade hidden between the sides. This knif is rare. Especially in this condition. The blade does have some oxidization and slight surface rust. The next tool measures 10” long and has a loop at the end. The handle is nice and tight although there is some slight separations. Set 2 Antique c1860's Civil War Era Hey's Saws Surgical Medical Trepanation For your consideration today is this set of two antique Hay's surgical saws. They were invented by and named after surgeon William Hay who lived from the mid 1700's to the early 1800's. These particular instruments were used in trephine operations on the skull to reduce fractures of bones of the skull. They were frequently found in a doctor's surgical kit during the Civil War. Both pieces are in pretty decent condition for their age. The saw with the blue tinted blade has some minor rusting on the blade itself. But all of the teeth are straight and sharp. There is also some rust buildup on the handle under the ebony portion. It has caused some minor splitting on the end. I believe that you could probably remove the wood and clean up the rust ... moreif so inclined. The middle of the handle also has 3 letters stamped into it, which I believe to be the initials of the owner. The other saw has some rust spots on the head, but the teeth are all straight and sharp as well. The handle appears to have been subject to liquid damage at one time as there is some damage to the wood portion as well as some rust under the wood. 1850's-60's free-blown pontilled bottle with'wide mouth' rolled lip. Shaped like some later urine sampling bottles.but I believe the labeling on this"no. 74 April 7. 1860" and"Robert Spanouse" x3 iterations! indicates this was likely some other type of medical( specimen that was held/curated and re-labeled over a period of many years. Another similar flask I'm selling is numbered"No.397 Aug. 4. 1870. This 7 3/8" tall bottle measures 1 3/8" uniform diameter inside mouth; 2 1/2" to- 2 5/8" diameter across outside edge of its rolled lip; uniform 2 1/2" diameter at its heel. The foot of its base is uniformly 1 3/4" diameter. The empontilling scar(pontil' is about 5/8" diameter. Note the unusual radial marks left by a tool that was used to press the re-fired(originally ... morejagged) tubular glass'open' pontil. It's crossed my mind a few times that this may indeed have held a body-fluid sample of some sort. That was covered by a semi-permeable'membrane' in order to let the specimen's water slowly evaporate. Allowing dust-free crystallization of organic components( for mineralogical/ crystallographic examination. Perhaps the name& number might be found in a catalog related to an important early medical study( The two flasks I acquired& am selling came from the estate of a geologist who did extensive research on the geochemistry of carbonate rocks in the 1930's-1960's so I've always supposed they might have held gall- or kidney-stones. But maybe not.maybe just the'evaporitic residue' of some very early(first non-uroscopic? pee tests.

Antique surgical saw-drill power set with all manner of accessories. The only date I found was on a chuck for 1895 pat. Has what appears to be a right angle adapter. Has saw hood with hose hookup for suction or irrigation line. Most mandrels are quick detach type for springloaded gate on drill. I would call this the grandaddy of the Stryker saw. I can't test it because the ceramic plug has two horizontal prongs unlike our modern vertical prong system. I suspect this is a rotating system unlike the back and forth reciprocating Stryker system. Hence the splash blade shield. You collectors probably know more than I. So see pictures.

Hi. You are bidding on an interesting bit of historical memorabilia from the Great War. Here are a very good condition fully operational pair of chrome plated long 25cm bullet retractors made by KNY- SCHEERER which has the snake& crown logo which was discontinued after the war. These retractors have an unusual but practical feature, the arms are slightly bowed in opposite directions, when inserting the retractors the handles would be squeezed together which would compress the retractors cross section to the size of the tip, when the bullet has been grabbed the out ward pressure of the bowed arms would act to open the exit wound and allow passage of the bullet. Antique surgical probes - weird and unusual tools - BETZ
I stumbled across these old tools in an antique store in Christian County. MO last week. I believe these are surgical probes and each measures 11-inches long. Each varies in thickness and the flattened end of each bears different markings. Four of the probes are each marked"BETZ" and the other is marked"AM.ST. 20 Stainless. The four BETZ probes are marked"A17" A19" A20" and"A22. Please feel free to ask questions. I will do my best to answer them. Also. Please check out my other auctions. ANTIQUE CIVIL WAR ERA SOLID BRASS SERRATED SURGICAL SCISSOR CLAMPING INSTRUMENT
Up for auction is this Civil War era solid brass medical/surgical instrument. The tool is a scissors like forcep like instrument with serrated edges on the clamping end. It measures about 8 1/2 inches long and opens as wide as about 7 1/2 inches. It is in nice shape w/ a wonderful antique patina to the brass. It was probably used. According to a doctor friend of ours, for removing foreign objects(ie-shrapnel during the Civil War! from the body during surgery. It could have also been used to assist the birthing process( although the serrated edges on the ends would put an unsightly mark on the baby's head so. The piece is in wonderful working order and has a great antique patina to the brass. It is not factory marked which indicates that it is quite old! The piece came from the estate of Dr. Elizabeth Doris Labovitz. A Philadelphia area ... moredoctor who collected antique medical items. Which allows you to hold the tool still, and the handle at the end screws& unscrews to allow you to release more or less of the segregated chain through the end of the instrument. This chain creates a loop at the end, and when you slide the small handle on the top towards you, it makes the loop at the end tight. There are no blades along the inside of this chain, so it isn’t a saw, and it does not hold anything tight enough to act like a tourniquet of some sort. Can you please solve the mystery and tell us what this 19 th century Scientific Medical Tool was used for? As you can see in the photographs. Rare Antique c1890 Medical Surgeons Silver Lithotrite Surgical Instrument
A rare antique medical surgeons Lithotrite instrument signed snake& staff with crown. Trademark KNY SCHEERER CO GERMANY. Dates 1889-c1890. Tip was inserted into the bladder via the urethra and located the stone. This instrument has teh ability to apply crushing force on a stone using screw mechanism by rotation of the handle. Handle also has a release mechanism for percussion. Wonderful silver finished solid brass in excellent condition. Works perfect. No damage or repair. No wear to silver.
