Vintage WW2"Jerry" Can. Dated 1944(44" with US marking. This can is in amazing condition and is actually a water can(W" marking) When I first bought it. I thought it was much newer. Based on my research this can was manufactured by Cavalier Steel Corporation for the US military in 1943 and 1944 only. Condition: Some minor dents/dings but this is one of the cleanest vintage cans I've ever come across. Even the inside is remarkable. Looks like original olive drab paint and almost no signs of rust. I was told that as kids. The fun thing to do there was to throw the rusted live Japanese grenades like skipping rocks. For auction is this great 5.3 U.S. gallons. Vintage May 20, 1976, USMC( U. S. Metal Container Company) DOT 5L, Jerry gasoline can. I copied the below interesting information of the can's origin directly from the Internet and am including it in this description for your information and further consideration. The history of the Jerrycan is notable because the German design was reverse engineered and subsequently copied by the Allies during World War II. The name of the jerrycan refers to its German origins. Jerry being wartime slang for Germans. The gas can is red and shows its age bearing scratches and some flaking paint from heavy use over the past 38 years of its existence. I see no holes or significant dents anywhere on the can. I believe this can is in very good condition for being a piece of commonly used military equipment. I found ... morethe can in my neighbor's garage while helping him clean it out in preparation of participating in his church's annual rummage sale. As soon as I saw it. I immediately bought it from him because it was USGI and had originally anticipated restoring the can and attaching it to my Jeep. Obviously, that never happened and, since I am divesting myself of a lifetime of collections, this piece is being listed for your consideration. Both sides of the can have the large 1.5" embossed"US" letters stamped into the center along the bottom edge and a large 1.5" letter"C" in the center of the can about 1.5" below the can's top seam. The overall measurements of the can are approximately 13.5" in length. 6.5" in width and 19.5" in height when measured from the bottom to the top of the can's handle. Used condition have been filled many times with JP8 and Diesel Fuel. I have Filled and Drained to check for leaks, minor scuffing as noted in pictures. They have been filled and drained so they will have the slight smell of kerosene(JP8) and/or Diesel Fuel, this will not interfere with you using them for gasoline, diesel, kerosene, or any other fuel you need to use them for. This is a pair of metal Flexible Spouts that fit 5Gal Gerry Gas Cans. The rubber gaskets on the bottom show some wear but are pliable and definitely usable. There is no filter screen in either of these spouts. They have been sitting around for many years on a shelf so they could use a good cleaning but are still flexible. Most collectors with vintage vehicles do this sort of thing to restore Gas Cans that they have on their vintage Jeeps. They also do not tend to try and put Gas into their Cans since they are very old and might have some rust on the inside.
