The units interior is clean and in good condition with only black tape around two wires. All other wiring is original and untouched. The single vacuum tube is present.The exterior is in overall good condition with minor paint spots missing and very small spots of rust.The antenna is in perfect condition. Time to get your hands on this working VSM-1 and analyze your spectrums in style! And I even put a new Lead Acid(sealed) 12v battery in it! Remove the handle and 4 tiny screws on the back and the case slides off. You do not need to remove the feet to get to the battery/ inside. Remember on old CRT equipment that you will shock the ever loving you-know-what out of yourself if you touch the big red wire going into the CRT. Sometimes hours after the unit has powered down. There are no warning labels anywhere With a little windex and a toothbrush you might be able to bring this to museum quality. I have left all the original dirt on it for your restoration pleasure After taking the case off and inspecting it. Installing a battery and playing with the dials, the only thing I could say is"What the hell is this thing? Everything appears to ... morework. I mean the dials do stuff to the signal on the screen, none are pitted and the inside is really clean. This model had a meter on the front panel, and was used to test TV reception and to align TV antennas to the proper orientation. This was a very rare find when I went to buy a lot of Philco Predicta televisions from a collector friend of mine. I have had it in my personal collection for about 10 years now. We installed 6 new 1 1/2 volt dry cells and turned it on. See photos. The light came on. The meter went to a little past 7 and best of all we received Cinncinatti News. We live near Pittsburgh, PA. The meter box does have scratches from as seen in the detailed photos. We will take out the batteries for shipping weight so.batteries not included. The field strength meter powers up and performs flawlessly over its entire rated frequency range of 535 kHz to 1605 kHz. One picture shows the meter measuring a local signal on 850 kHz after calibration. Another picture shows the condition of the internal batteries and the battery circuitry. Carrying handle on top. I checked only to see that the meter deflects. Still needs some cosmetic cleaning for collectible status, but otherwise solid and clean. Requires batteries for the operating voltages(Batteries not included) of two SIGNAL CORPS BA-2 22.5 volt.S interconnected originally on a terminal strip, labeled-B. +-B. And +B. Tube filament requires one SIGNAL CORPS BA-23 1.5 volt. Number 6 dry cell. Tags on the wires indicate-A and +A. I have included a photo from a vintage 1943 Handbook advertising batteries of the era.
