Nice set of vintage climbing equipment. Buckingham Manufacturing Company Bell System Belt is leather with heavy duty buckle and rings for tree/ pole strap. Has built in tool holders. Metal reinforcement on belt has what appears to be brass fasteners. The backside of the buckle is imprinted with what appears to say Bell System and some other worn lettering- see photos. On the back of the belt is a brass tag that has some numbers and Buckingham. Tree/ Pole strap is leather with heavy duty snap hooks that snap onto rings on belt. Adjustable with heavy duty buckle. Spikes are heavy metal with leather padded pieces at the top. Points are sharp. Metal has signs of use with some minor twist in the metal- see photos. On the back of one of the spikes it says. Klein& Sons Chicago/ cat. no 1901" This style has permanently attached spikes. These are certainly used but as the last photo shows still quite sharp and undamaged. The pads are marked Bashlin and have leather straps upper and lower. Antique pole climbing spikes, VERY COOL, strap on, logging gear or electric gear
This vintage pair of climbing spikes is up for bid. There is no reserve on this bidding. So good luck. Back in the day, electricians and loggers would use these strap-on spikes for pole climbing purposes. The body of them is made out of steel, heated and shaped and fashioned to have the right angle for the spike to bite into the pole as they made their ascent. The straps are very sturdy leather, with a large buckle. These have to be put on tightly, because your life would depend on them. I believe these are from the 60's or 70's. Nowadays they have equipment that can raise a man up and down, but loggers may still use similar rigging. 16.5" tall, and the pairs weighs about 3 pounds. Nice old pair of climbing spikes. Blacksmith made with forge welded hand hammered spikes. no markings that i could find. leather is very rotted with tears. one top strap is missing. they measure about 16 inches long. the spikes are about 3 inches long and the width of the boot opening is about 3 inches. these are early style as the iron straps go on the outside of the leg and the spike is on the open end. the dimensions of each vary slightly as they are hand made. I would not advise using these, They should be enjoyed as a fine antique and example of the blacksmith art.
