Fly Fishing

Fly fishing in Finland

By Tom Chandler 8/2/2006

This is one of the things I love about the Internet - not the endlessly repeating topics found on the general message boards, but the chance to gain a little insight into the fly fishing lives of others.

This time, I noticed a referral link from opax - a blog dedicated to fly fishing in Finland. Some spaces between updates, but I've always wondered what fly fishing is like in other countries. I'm keeping an eye on this new blog.

Interesting. There are even one or two that bear a resemblance to the mighty slaw dog, but I admit to being amazed by the length of the menu and the tiny size of the food stand. You Fins really do know how to pack a lot in a little...

:D Tom, Check this out: http://www.nurja.com/nurja/quest-of-the-ullan-grilli.html There is a picture of local "restaurant" Ullan Grilli (Ulla's Grill) and review of all of "the food" available. You may not understand the text, but the pictures are quite easy to follow... Ian, It is argued, in Finland, that Simo Lumme invented synthetic yarn pupa pattern SL-Pupa (http://globalflyfisher.com/staff/torp/lumme.htm) ... more before Gary LaFontaine and that LaFontaine get a look at those flies before developing his Sparkle Pupa patterns...

Opax; my blog software gave me an "incoming links" note when you linked to me, so I investigated. There's no hiding from the Underground... And Ian's right - I was expecting they'd be more enlightened than us gearhead fly pattern geeks, but there you are, obsessing about your fly boxes like the rest of us... 8-) I do have to ask one question - does Finland have anything like the Tennessee/Northern ... more California slaw dog?

Pretty cool..... Although I must admit I was hoping to hear about Haggar Gierarch's essays or Sven Lafontaine. Apparently it's exactly the same over there, just different. Sort of like fly fishing in the East and the West.

Tom, Thank you. I'll try to keep updates coming. ;) Just out of curiosity - how/when did you find my blog? I found your site yesterday when browsing different fly fishing blogs and apparently you found mine about the same time.
