Upper Madison River Fishing Report - The fish are down low so make sure you are scraping the bottom. There are some browns late in spawning but mostly that is over. Big stoneflies ... moreand rubber legs are getting action. If it warms up, you may want to try out your favorite streamer.

Lower Madison River Fishing Report - Because of the below zero nights, ice is forming where it is slow and shallow so be careful. As it warms later this week, the midges will begin to catch proving some prime winter fishing. Fishing below Ennis Dam has been working in the deeper holes but stay away from below Blacks Ford as it is unfishable. Streamers with small nymphs floating on or near the bottom can get you some action.

The water temperature has been quite cold so make sure you are layered up underneath your waders. Dropped into Jerry Creek and worked my way through Maiden Rock. The midges are out ... moreso I recommend a hatching midge in the afternoon from 1-4pm. Egg Flies, streamers, and small beadhead nymphs, such as a size 18 beadhead Pheasant Tail are your best choices.

Put away your midges and nymphs until January and get out your princes with a pheasant tail. ... moreMake sure they are on the bottom as the trout are not going to move much. Look at the slower tail outs for rising fish. The recent weather has improved the water levels of the river making for better fishing.

This river has begun the winter fishing mode. ... moreIf it warms up you can try midges but if it stays cold, you will get the most productivity out of nymphing. Consider using an indicator or double nymphing. Inside the seams seems to be the most productive. Streamers have been working as well.

The Upper Clark Fork River has good flows and color. Use streamers in the slower waters that are deeper, behind boulders and drop-offs, an along current seams. The Clark Fork River below Missoula is getting action with dry flies.

River ice is building up with the lower temperatures so be careful on the Gallatin River. Find a safe place to wade fishing that is stable. The lower water is pushing the trout into ... moredeeper pools, runs, and foam seam lines. Make sure to hit every inches when you find a good spot as the trout don’t want to move much at this time of year. Midges, streamers, and blue-winged olives are your best bet.
