Upper Madison River Fishing Report - A winter storm has rolled in with temperatures dropping into the teens mid week and then warming into the low 40’s on Saturday. The bigger ... morefish are feeding more on the overcast days with Nymphs being the most effective. Medium-small dark stonefly patterns with worms, eggs, midge pupa or small attractor patterns have been working great. If you get a hatch, then Midges on top is a good bet. With the fish trying to exert as little energy as possible, look for them in the slower waters including behind rocks, deep, and inside seams and pools.

Lower Madison River Fishing Report - This storm that has moved in should make for some excellent fishing the next week. But, ice has formed around the edges so be careful. Pheasant Tails, Rubber Legs, Midge Larvae, Pink Nymphs, Worms, and Eggs have all been good. Make sure you are fishing the bottoms, especially in the deeper holes. Look for the midges to hatching along the edges. Look for tail water fisheries for consistent fishing action.

A storm has rolled in to help with the much needed snow pack. Layer up because it very cold with daytime temperatures in the 20’s. It looks to warm up towards the end of the ... moreweek which could bring more hatched. Watch for ice. The flow is low. Small stoneflies are working quite well as well Rubberlegs and Little Sloans. Stick with the lower stretches of water at the bottom. Mayfly and Midge Nymphs will be all at the bottom.

The temperature is dropping through the week and then warming up into the low 40’s on Friday and Saturday. Keep away from the Midges and Nymphs till January but a Prince with ... morea Pheasant Tail could do the trick. Streamers are also a good choice. Bell Crossing Fishing Access was a good choice through the deep pockets on stray fish moving upstream.

With the storm that has moved in and this being a cold part of Montana, you might want to try a different area. It will be warming up later on this week with sun in the forecast for ... moreSaturday and a high of 40 s. This could be a good fish day. I recommend Blue-winged Olives and streamers. You can also try a Red San Juans for occasional trout. Give it another month or so and the Trout will be more active on the springs.

It's tough weather out there. I would recommend waiting till Friday and Saturday as it will warm to the 40’s and clear up. There have been good flow and color. Look for trout ... morein the slower, deeper water, around boulders, and in current seams. A Prince teamed with a pheasant tail is what the Doctor orders this time of year. Make sure you are oh the bottom. Streamers are also another good choice.

Last week the fishing was quite good with the warmer weather. But with the storm that has rolled in, the temperatures have dropped into the mid 20’s making the fishing conditions ... morea bit more challenging. The fishing itself has been very good. Make sure to layer up during the week if you are going to be out there. Towards the end of the week the temperatures should move up in the 40’s with sun on Saturday. Some good Midge hatches may materialize during this time. Watch out for the ice build up during the week. The valley is where we would fishing on the Gallatin River. The water temperatures are more stable. Nymphs are our best choice with Stoneflies and Midges. Look for the Fish to be in deep pools and large seems. On Saturday you may also see some fish rise to Midges.

The storm that has rolled in should clear up by mid week and temperatures should improve from the 20’s to the 40’s. This makes for much better conditions mid week and on. ... moreThe ice is starting to become an issue as we get into winter so be careful. Double Nymph rig with a Rubberlegs has been doing the trick. Good for both trout and whitefish. Little Midges have been some of the best flies. Also try streamers with a Nymph and dead drift it. Make sure to you cover every inch as the fish are not going to want to move much with the cold water.

The weather has switched back to cold and snow for the next week so watch out for the ice. I would sleep in and fish between 11-4 when it is the warmest. You will be the most successful ... morewith Nymphs, Worms and Eggs. You can also try some streamers with a dead drift and a slow strip.

Wooly ... moreBuggers with small beads continue to produce. Make sure to keep them deep and hit every inch as the fish are in winter mode and not moving much.
