Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Distortion Vintage Rare Op-Amp unit
I believe I have a version 4 pedal based on information from the site below. You can see the op-amps in the pics(somewhat) It has the tone bypass. the board is a 3003. I use it with the the distortion barely on and get a great full sound. Made in NY City in the late 70's. Info below is from Kit Rae big muff site. VERSION 4 BIG MUFF WITH TRANSISTORS AND TONE BYPASS. THE V4 SOUND- This is a great distortion pedal with a big sound and much of the same scooped mids character of the previous transistor versions. But not exactly the same sound. Overall the V4 has a slightly flatter mid range, less gain, and less bottom end than the V3 and V6 transistor versions, but the V4 is also much quieter than a V3 or V6 when the sustain is maxed. I think the transistor versions are much more organic and reactive to pick attack and harmonics than the V4, ... morebut the V4 still sounds great for crushing, grungier, wall-of-sound distortion, heavy distorted rhythm playing, and heavy leads. They are probably not as good for palm muting as the transistor versions and the fzz or buzz that is typical with a Big Muff has a slightly more machine-like metallic feel than the transistor versions. As with the transistor versions, the scooped tone makes them easy to get lost in a band mix when playing live with certain amps. Unlike the transistor versions. The V4 tone is very consistent from unit to unit. Some units may have a noticable volume/gain boost when the pedal is switched off due to the fact that these old Big Muffs do not bypass the signal even when off. The signal still goes through and is amplified by the active op-amps, which can sometimes add a gain boost. Adding a true bypass switch can eliminate this problem. This is likely the Big Muff circuit heard on most of Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot albums, so that should give an idea of the potential of this version. You're bidding on a Reference Series MXR Micro Amp(model M-133) Manufactured in Rochester NY in 1979(pot code 1377917- see photos) I removed the foam, which had decayed over time, from the bottom of the pedal but it's 100% unmodified- there's no LED or power supply input, which was typical of Reference Series pedals. It has the usual scratches and dings here and there. But that's not unusual for a 35-year old pedal. The op-amp is the original TL061 and the circuit board layout is nearly identical to the Distortion +. Sounds great, with up to a 26 dB boost. It's an excellent clean boost for an acoustic instrument if that's what you need, or it'll pound the hell out your amp's preamp, allowing you to control overdrive with you guitar's volume knob. THE thick Big Muff- the v5. Op-amp, with tone bypass. Made in NYC, made famous by Bill Corgan, and in good working order. This one is selling with the original box and manual. It's an incredible. Thick, loud fuzz. I've used it for years for giant MBV/Smashing Pumpkins rhythm sounds in my studio, but it's always been too big for the pedalboard to take out to gigs. The"tone bypass" is a rather unique option- the traditionally mid-scooped Big Muff becomes a heaving fuzz monster- guaranteed to cut right through a mix! When can you ever say that about a Big Muff? This fuzz will arrive in working order. It has two small issues: 1) The battery connection on the inside isn't working. It appears to be a very easy soldering fix. But I run my pedals on AC adapter and haven't ever made the fix. The Big Muff V5 from 1978-79(this one 1979) is the king of tight and deep walls of fuzz ala Smashing Pumpkins. A pure juy to play as there is a sheer force and power inside these beasts. A good V5 also has all that midrange articulation left intact which is part of what makes it so wide and authoritative. This is a GREAT V5 here. Switch to your ridge side pickups and you can hear a perfect mid lift. Switch back to the neck and it's slightly scooped heavenly waves of fuzz. This is one of the cleanest V5's I've ever seen. Also used by Mr. Corgan. On Siamese dream the 70's op-amp big muff was used for rhythm tones. And for leads, he would cascade an MXR dist 2 into the big muff. This box puts them both in one use. This is a limited-edition Big Muff clone. In partnership with Daredevil Pedals and Chicago Music Exchange. Rather than transistors, like most Big Muffs, this big muff uses op amps to get its gnarly dirt. This circuit was made very famous by Billy Corgan on the Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream album. Pretty brutal fuzz. J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. has also used an op amp Muff at times. If you roll back the sustain knob, you can get smoother Pink Floyd Gilmour-esque tones.
