Roller inductor and variable capacitor - homebrew tuner - looks like 160 meters
This is a really cool homebrew tuner using a roller inductor and large variable capacitor. The roller inductance is 20uh. And the cap is 350 pf, measured on a B&K digital LCR meter. From the values, it looks like a tuner for 160 meters, but with those values, it could work on other bands as well. I used something similar to this with smaller components to load my 160 meter inverted L. It looks like it came from a smokers environment and needs a good nicotine cleaning. Varian MCSD D01000531-00A 3 gang inductor. This is an assembly of three separate inductors which can be removed and used as three individual inductors. Each inductor has 13 wires coming from the internal coil. Each wire appears to be an equal step so that the maximum inductance is obtained between tap#1 and#13. A porportional smaller inductance is obtained by using a lower number than 13 as the tap connection. This was used with a high voltage three phase power supply and the inductor would be used to vary the inductance for regulation of different loads. 1974 VOX King Wah Made by Thomas Organ in Sepulveda. California. This was sounding nice when I got it. But the pot was terribly scratchy. It was a Clarostat dated 1974. So. I popped a new old stock 100k Clarostat in there and indexed and greased the gearing. And that was all she needed. This unit has the sonically superior and less common"Stack of Dimes" inductor. It sounds fantastic. Very funky and quacky and vocal. I was just getting some really pretty. Almost aquatic tones working it nice and slow. She don't look like much. But she's solid, and sounds sweet. Pot. Jacks and switch all operate correctly and are nice and quiet. Pedal ships with a brand new Electro Harmonix 9v battery included. General Radio GR Variable Inductor 107L Authentic and working but minus the wooden box it once had. In good pysical and working condition. I had checked it out on my GR bridge and it does work. With both the large knob and the smaller fine knob. It rotates smoothly, the inner coil turns inside the outer fixed one. Even quite a conversation piece sitting out on a table. It is nicely made. Steampunk? Not really steam age. From the 1940-60's but seems to me it has the look. The main knob metal skirt is about 4 inches(10cm) in diameter I had hoped to make a replacement wooden box for it and keep it around because it truly is a fine almost handmade thing from a historic Boston area company. Here is a nice large. Heavy duty roller inductor that is ideal for your ham radio antenna tuner. Amplifier or transmitter project. The coil in this roller inductor has 45 turns of heavy wire wound on a 2 inch diameter heavy ceramic form. The end supports are made of heavy 1/4" thick phenolic board. A spring loaded contact slides along a 1/4" metal rod to give a secure connection. The 2" long. 1/4" diameter control shaft has a large spinner knob attached. This roller inductor is 7" long not counting the control shaft and the end supports are 3 1/2" square. It appears to be of commercial construction but has no makers name on it. Thomas Organ Vintage 1970s Crybaby Cry Baby Wah Pedal TDK Inductor True Bypass EXC Original early'70s Thomas Organ Crybaby wah with the desirable"TDK" inductor with a complete premium upgrade package. The original pot has been replaced with a NOS Dunlop Hot Potz I(Clarostat) And sweep has been properly adjusted(using meter) The switch was upgraded to a genuine Carling DPDT, which is exactly the same size and brand as the original, and wired for true bypass. The jacks have been upgraded to genuine Switchcraft equivalents. All rubber bumpers and feet have been replaced with new Dunlop replacement parts. Stainless steel Helicoil thread inserts have been installed into the casing for the feet, and stainless steel screws have been installed in the new rubber feet. The battery foam patch is new. Overall the wah is in really nice shape ... morecosmetically and now works far better than new with the upgrades. Best part is, though, the original circuit board and solder joints remain untouched, however, it now has the modern reliability and functionality of any premium wah. Has not been used after the service other than to setup and verify proper operation. Delivers that classic'70s Thomas Organ Crybaby quack the new ones don't seem to have. I love the 70's Sepulveda made wahs- I maybe have 2 dozen. And keep trying to find one that I like as much as the one I bought used in 1980! Yep, I have Vox's and Clydes from the day, but my 70's era upbringing keeps me hooked on these particular ones. Going by the pot code(134) it was made in 1974, some wear around the edges but looks pretty good, sounds great and has the TDK inductor. Now me personally, the 2 best sounding ones I have are TDK's, and last weekend at the Spartanburg guitar show I had several old school guys like myself agree that was their favorite- also had a few that liked the stack of dimes better, so it's all personal preference.
