Vintage 1927 Watt Hour Meter - Bailey Meter Company by General Electric
This Vintage Watt Hour Electric Meter was made by Bailey Meter Company by General Electric Company. According to the metal nameplate. It is a Fluid Meter Integrator, Type F I- No. 13107790- Volts 110- NP39846- Cycles 60. On the back of the meter is a paper label giving Patent Numbers of 984297, 1180794, 1080795& 1192680. There is a Portland General Electric Company sticker on the top of the meter. It is a nice electric meter as I hope the pictures will show. I ship within the United States and accept PayPal only. Early 1900s Westinghouse Type SM A C Amperes Ammeter power meter measures 7 1/4" diameter. 4" high(not including 3" high bolts) Weight is over 8 1/2 lbs. Frame and Glass is attached by removeable bolts. All appears to be in very good condition! This one would lend itself well to steampunk(lamp) or other artwork! This was an estate find from the home of a long ago retired Cincinnati gas and electric company employee. I'll note that I purchased from this same estate about 15 different and some alike of these old meters about a year ago and list one every so often. Two that I listed were identical to this one and sold on Ebay auction for 165.00 and 126.00. I am remembering now that I did disassemble those. Not an electrical person. Please ask questions and I will try to answer. Following is the info on the meter: Westinghouse watthour meter. 5 amps 120 volts. type CS. single phase s.821541 serial 15 244 397. two wire MADE IN USA 11-7-1937. Nicely cased. Portable. Plugged it in and attached my fryer to it and the large wheel started to spin around. Found some info on the web: The CS was a completely new design and the first of the modern socket meters. When meter mounting arrangements were standardized in 1934. The CS's enclosure design was emulated by the other manufacturers. The CA was introduced the same year when a new standard enclosure was developed for the bottom-connected singlephase meters. The first CS and CA meters had the same alphanumeric serial number system as the previous OC meters(and use the same stator design) The magnet ... moreassembly on this group of meters were painted black as was done on the OB and OC meters. In 1937, these meters had two changes: The magnet assembly was now painted silver and the alphanumeric serial number format was abandoned, the first new serial number being#15,000,000. Starting in 1940(16,500,000) the magnet assembly got a heavy layer of copper plating for surge protection(but this method was not as effective as using Alnico magnets) During WWII, a limited number of meters were made and these have thin plated COPPER disks. Some CS and CA meters are known with cyclometer or odometer registers and these are not as common as the pointer-type register.

It is in very good Original Condition without being restored. It is a vary rare meter being it is the larger 220 Volt model. Type D-7, 3 Wire 2 and 3 Phase. What makes it even more timeless and unique is the fact it still retains the original P.G. E. metal locks on wing nuts located next to the top name plate(see picture) It has not even been opened for over 50 years since the last day it was in use. This is a older version of this meter. You can tell by the four clock like dials under the top cover. Both glass covers are clean and is excellent condition. The numbers in the top glass matches the white numbers on the case. I believe this antique Westinghouse meter dates sometime between the late nineteen-teens and early 1920s. I did power it up using a light bulb inline and it worked. There is a crack in the glass. Type I-14, 60 cycle, 2 wire, 10 amps, 110 volts, 114 781 78(I presume to be the serial number) I am NOT an electrician. So I have no idea what any of this means. Nor do I know if it works, which is why I listed as non-working-for parts. Research indicates this type meter was 1st made around 1915. Don't know if that is when this was made, all I know is it looks old. Research also indicates this meter consists of a hollow cast iron casting, finished in original enamel black finish. The reinforced glass case is held down with 2 original cast brass wing nuts. The cover swings out when access is needed to the terminals. Other than old looking. Meter appears to be in decent shape. The glass cover is in beautiful shape. Clean with no cracks or breaks. It ... morehas 4 hole openings on the bottom, 2 for line, 2 for load. I believe the case is made of Black Bakelite, one of the first plastics made from synthetic components. Dimensions: 4” tall x 4¼” wide x 1” deep. Rear of panel is 3” diameter and 1¼ deep. These are the large VU meters that gave that iconic look to all the classic Vintage Tube Audio Equipment of yesterdays gone by.
