Early 20th Century GE Watthour Electric Power Meter 1913-1927
This Auction is for a very old General Electric Single-Phase Watthour Meter No. 9539-211 Type. I-14 Cyc. 60 Amp. 15 Volts 220 3 Wire. The item appears to be in original condition having been well cared for over the past 8 0 or so years since it has seen service. This is a vintage early 20th century type I-14 induction residential watt-hour meter dating between 1913- 1927. Clear glass pane protects the four dials. Removal of the two wing nuts allows access to the electrical components. In 1915. GE purchased the fort Wayne electric works which it had wholly owned since 1898 and operated it as an extension of their meter plant in West Lynn, Ma until meter manufacturing was discontinued at Fort Wayne in May 1929. The I-14 was an upgrade from the earlier models(I. I-8 and I-10) since it has much easier access to the terminals. In the case of this ... moremeter, the tamper/inspection tags are still threaded through the brass wing-nuts and bolts. Still attached on the front side of the meter are the"Notice- Laws of 1909. Section 405. In addition, T here is a"Meter Test Card" dated 4-18-1924. The unit is Numbered 48731 on the front cover. Two of the wire leads have been cut at the housing and the two remaining have had insulation stripped near the terminals(see pic) Aside from the cosmetic wear which comes from normal use and age. It looks to could very well be in working order, although it is untested by me. The unit weighs 8 1/2 lbs and is 5 1/2" wide. 7" long and 4 1/4" deep. Weston DC voltmeter. Or electric meter, apparently from a power station panel or some kind of utility company generator control. Meter made by Weston Electric Corp. Newark. Brass makers plate with last patent date July 1901; first patent date Nov 1888. Model 57. A hand inked serial number on paper dial(red arrow) matches serial number on brass plate. Freestanding at slight angle as salvaged out of old control panel many years ago. Purchased near Waterloo, Iowa and supposedly came from the John Deere tractor works in Waterloo, Iowa. Big needle is manually set with knurled knob(which turns easily) Small needle indicates voltage. Voltage needle appears to work—hooked up to 12 volt battery and needle moves appropriate distance(see pic) BUT can’t figure how to adjust needle to zero position. Don’t see any adjusting screws; might need to open case. ... moreWas only able to test the low range—0 to 30 volts—wasn’t able to test high range. 0-150. With its curved design. This was probably at the very top of a control panel. Made with multiple plys of wood like a piece of cabinetry; the top ply I think is mahogany. There are some pieces of ply missing on back side. Early 1900s Westinghouse Type SM A C Amperes Ammeter power meter measures 7 1/4" diameter. 4" high(not including 3" high bolts) Weight is over 8 1/2 lbs. Frame and Glass is attached by removeable bolts. All appears to be in very good condition! This one would lend itself well to steampunk(lamp) or other artwork! This was an estate find from the home of a long ago retired Cincinnati gas and electric company employee.
