ca 1950 electrical cobbler automaton, multiple movement to both arms & head
Offered here as a buy it now with free domestic UPS ground shipping is this ca 1950 electrical cobbler automaton. He sits 29" high. 10 1/2" wide and 19" deep. So he's not small(and not light) The movement is wonderful. First, after his head has turned to his left, the left hand raises to the mouth as if to pull a nail from between his lips. After than hand is lowered to the heel of the shoe, his head turns to his right and the right hand with the hammer drops down to hit the nail. The left hand then pulls way so that the right hand can be raised and then lowered again as if to hit the nail a second time. At this point the process repeats itself, over and over if left plugged in. The mechanics of this automaton are in perfect working order and insofar as I can tell, wholly original to the piece, which as my 9th picture shows(the ... morein side of the back panel) was made by the Nelson& Wallace Manufacturing Co of Los Angeles. There are two small restorations. Both quite logical given the movement of the hands. First, the hammer in the right hand apparently came loose at the hand and has been re-glued and re-plastered in place. Second, the fingers of his left hand have also obviously been restored(doubtlessly from getting hit with the wooden hammer too many times over the years) These two restorations are evident in pictures 10-12 and correspond to the only slightly matching repaint there. The sole addition I made was to add a thin rubber foam heel to the shoe so as to soften the blows of the hammer and avert the need for a future restoration. There is some occasional cracking to the gesso surface. But nothing obtrusive o r extensive in the slightest. The white strip on the counter top is where someone apparently put down some tape and removed the pain when removing the tape. Not sure what he's made of. a very hard molded composition of some sort. harder and more durable than paper mache. But not anything recent like fiberglass. Again s hipping and professional packing by UPS ground is free.
