This is the most versatile and simple to use stepper driver I have found. It can be controlled with a pulse(square wave) input from any source so you can use a microcontroller for digital control. Or a 555 timer with pot for analog control. I used a simple schmitt trigger oscillator with a CD40106(easier than a 555 if you haven't learned the trick yet) I was able to breadboard a working analog control circuit in 15 minutes and plan to use it in some of my kinetic artwork.
