I have no idea what it was used for. I did plug it in and all the plug outlets were hot. You can se in my photos that there is a fine dark rust color over whatever the metal is in the center. Standard Electric Adjust-A-Volt Type LR-5 - 500VA Variable Isolation Transformer
Up for sale is a Vintage Standard Electric Adjust-A-Volt Type LR-5 Variable Isolation Transformer. It's in good working order and i s marked up as doing 70-140V(but actually puts out more like 80-160V due to the higher mains voltage at our house) at 500 VA. I replaced the power cord with a 3 wire one. So it's grounded. The grommet was shot and should be replaced and the terminal strip was broken, so I've taped it up but you'll likely want to replace that as well. It's also missing a rubber foot. This is very handy- it combines variable voltage with isolation. So it's two tools in one. It has a neat feature where it gives a warning buzz when you pass 110, but of course that's out of calibration now. This is the only one on ebay- don't let it get away!
