Normally you set the controls as indicated in the charts and then turn on the tester and then when the tube warms up you adjust the pointer to the LINE mark(halfway) The pointer doesn't move when the tester is turned on and nothing happens when I adjust the knob. When I push the short merit button. The pointer moves to give a condition value, but without the line adjust, there is not way to know how good that value is(as far as I know) I don't know if there is anything else wrong with it. This being the case, I am selling it for parts or repair. In addition. The left button engages raw AC power and the right routes it through the filter. Only one of the power cords in back is live. The other is a dummy to avoid customer questions. All AC power is switched digitally inside by the buttons. Monster figured it was easier to use a dummy rather than include two separate circuits inside. I didn't think this was anything other than a marketing gadget when I acquired it some time ago. I was wrong. This is a very useful unit for testing your AC line noise and diagnosing and solving the problems noisy AC power is causing your sytem. Lights, TV, etc. Even the air conditioning unit! The numerical read out allows you to record results. It helped me to figure out which lights in the room were most contributing to noise as well as demonstrating that a single capacitor filter plugged into the system eliminated the radio station wiring was picking up and transmitting to my components. Another big point is it also helps with setting up grounding for your system. The read out and speaker will both let you know when you are on the right track. It is a very presentable unit but does have several scratches on the top back and a crack on the back right screw. This is a very well made unit.
