I have borrowed the following description from a website that hopefully knows what they are talking about- The DIRECT CONNECT Model 5508TC is a plug-in data acquisition board that contains on-board signal conditioning and detachable screw terminations to connect directly to most common thermocouple types. The combination of all measurement elements and special shielding on the data acquisition board inside the PC provides better noise performance than external modules and chassis designs. The 5508TC data acquisition board has 8 channels of thermocouple inputs that can be sampled at rates up to 8 kHz with 12 bit resolution. Software selection for thermocouple type or mV inputs is provided on a channel-to-channel ... morebasis. The 5508TC supports interrupts.
