Here you are looking at a very rare estate find. It is an EXTREMELY hard to find Toby Jug made by Wilkinson Ltd England in 1915. This particular Toby is one of a set of 11 designed by Francis Carruthers Gould. Out of the 11 made. This may be the best and rarest! He is Admiral Jellicoe and is sitting and holding a jug that reads"Hell Fire Jack" On the base are the initials of the designer, FCG" The bottom has the Royal Staffordshire Pottery mark as well as Wilkinson Ltd England. Also it is marked"Rgd no 644985" Also it is signed F Carruthers Gould and bears the mark of Soane& Smith, where it was sold. This amazing find measures 10 inches tall and is in excellent condition! Son of Jay Gould, inherited his father’s estate and was important in his own right. One of the two punch cancellations touches the“J” in Gould’s signature. Crisp. A couple of pinholes. Here's another the old or antique bottles with a primitive appearance from the small collection we've been listing from for several weeks now. This one seems to be one of the more early bottles in the group with some crude appearance details. This is a relatively small bottle embossed"Dr. E Gould's Pin Worm Syrup" We were curious enough to see what this product was all about and were able to find an advertisement indicating it was made of purely vegetable ingredients and seems to have come onto the scene as a new product in about 1862 or at the time of the Civil War. There is more information easily available on the internet for those having interest. This one has no chips or cracks noted. It is reasonably clean but some might want to address some white mineral deposits on the exterior and interior as shown in the pictures. ... moreThe bottle 5 inches tall. EARLY 1900's FERN BRAND CHOCOLATES BOX - THE GARDNER & GOULD CO. BURLINGTON IA
Up for auction is an original early 1900's Fern Brand Chocolates box from The Gardner& Gould Co. of Burlington. Iowa. It is empty but originally contained one pound of chocolates. E. T. Gardner and E. C. Gould, who had worked for J. W. Smithers, launched their company on June 1, 1900 to manufacture candy and sell confectioners' supplies at 217 Washington in Burlington. Quickly outgrowing the building, they moved their operations to 223 S 3rd Street in Burlington on March 1904. By 1906, the Fern Brand of chocolates was known across the country with 45-60 people employed as well as 6 salesmen in Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. The company was successful for many years. I'm not certain of the date of this box, but I would guess it is pre-1930. Condition is good with obvious signs of wear, but the two-piece box ... moreis solid with no corner or edge tears. Nice old piece of Burlington, Iowa history. Please email any questions.
