This unit is a 16 digit multiplexed incandescent display from one of the earliest calculators(I cannot remember which one but it was pictured in one of the online calculator museums) Boy they were ambitious in those days. 16 digits, wow! I guess since they probably cost as much as a car, yet only did addition/subtraction/multiplication/division, you would want to impress the customer with something special(8 digits just wouldn't be as impressive) There were originally 16 red wires(one for each digit position) coming off the back of this unit; these were the digit drive signals. It would be simple to replace these missing wires. There were also 7 or 8 wires for the multiplexed 7 segment digits(and decimal point) these too will need replacing(easy stuff) I tried to photograph one of the segments while lit up but I could not get the light ... morelevel of the camera to work properly- in the photo. The segment looks blurry and over exposed. I assure you it's very clear and distinct in reality. I was using 6V to run the bulb and it seemed about right(sorry, forgot to check the current while I had it hooked up) Each digit is in a self contained module that includes 8 bulbs and plugs into a back plane. This could be used for a scrolling retro clock? clock/calendar/temperature? Caller id? It's gotta be good for some sort of cool retro project? The digit spacing is about 9/16" Digit height(7 segment pattern) is ~0.66" Over all the display unit measure roughly 10" long, 2" deep, 2.5" high. I will be selling other display technologies soon.
