Hewlett-Packard Vintage Model 521AR Frequency Counter
Up for auction is this very interesting piece of vintage test equipment: a Hewlett-Packard Model 521AR Frequency Counter(the"R" is to denote the rack-mount cabinet configuration) The display on this unit is unique. With a set of 4"stacks" of the numbers 0 through 9, with a neon light bulb behind each digit. In operation the digits in each stack will very rapidly count up, then when the reading is complete one digit in each column will stay illuminated, indicating the frequency. Very cool! I shot a brief video of the unit in operation. Which can be viewed at: The manual says the frequency range is up to 220 KHz with"option 03" whatever that is. I'm sure it describes what"option 03" is somewhere in the manual. But I didn't see it. Max frequency without this mysterious option is 120 KHz. This is ... morea vacuum-tube powered counter. Not sure when the unit was built. But the printing date on the manual is 1967(although the copyright date is 1959) and I saw references to this model on the internet as early as 1955. So I guess the build date could be anytime from 1955 through the late'60's) Included are the counter itself, an input cable with the bnc connector on one end and a couple of alligator clips on the other end, and the manual, which contains operating instructions as well as maintenance procedures, circuit descriptions, and schematic diagrams of the unit. The unit appears to be fully operational(with one minor exception noted below) When I touched the input the display correctly read the 60 Hz AC in the room that my body was acting as an"antenna" for. And when I hooked it up to a frequency generator and slowly increased the frequency the counter displayed the frequency as approximately indicated on the generator's dial. The one operational issue is that the neon bulb behind the"5" digit on the left-most column does not illuminate. It passes all the internal self-check routines, it is stable and accurate. The source locking function works very well with a EIP 931 signal generator.
