ww 2 Vollrath Black 1942 enamel canteen
Up for auction is a black enamel canteen. Made by Vollrath. In 1942 the ration board eliminated aluminum which canteens of the period were made of. A substitute product was sought and steel was used. However. Steel easily rusted so to correct the problem an enamel coating was added. This did not solve the problem because when the canteen was dropped,kicked, dented, ect, the enamel would flake off. From what I found due to these production flaws in design they were only produced for 1yr and primarily issued to marine forces in the pacific theater. This canteen has several exposed flakes in the enamel which is shown in the picture. Being as this could be from combat/field use, it adds to the feel and does not take away from the piece. The bakealite cap and chain are complete. All in all this is a superb piece and a great addition to any WWII ... moremarine specific theater collection.
