Tex Guinan's famous speakeasy, the Statue of Liberty saying"Give Me Liquour or Give Me Death" and more. This magazine was owned by Wilford Hamilton"Captain Billy" Fawcett who created the Fawcett Publishing empire from the highly successful Captain Billy's Whiz Bang magazine he had launched in the early 1920s. Smokehouse Monthly was an early Fawcett title based on the company's successful Whiz Bag format. This magazine is really an excellent artifact of the Roaring 20s and the Prohibition era. History of Cades Cove Cades Cove started out as a Cherokee settlement called“T siya’hi” or Otter Place back around 1797. The Cove was eventually named for the Chief of that tribe. Chief Kade. After the Treaty of Calhoun in 1819, the Cherokee relinquished all claims to the Smoky Mountain area. John Oliver settled Cades Cove around that same time. Soon other great founding families arrived such as William“Fighting Billy” Tipton, Peter Cable and Daniel Foute. By 1839, Cades Cove had a population of over 650 and had its post office and a weekly ... moremail route set up. Religion played a very important part in this fairly isolated settlement and while the Oliver’s founded the Baptist church, several other religious entities moved in such as Methodist, Primitive Baptist as well as several other smaller factions of the Baptist Church. Cades Cove history continues on richly through the Civil War, Prohibition and other major national events. Cades Cove was established as a National Park through the power of eminent domain in 1927. After a series of lawsuits and protests, finally by 1960, all residents of Cades Cove no longer lived there and the churches were empty and the government owned all lands for the Smoky Mountain National Park. This is a seldom seen 1936 Groetchen Smokehouse Trade Stimulator. Exterior is an older restoration, that was done years ago, but still looks very good. As in many of my machines, keys were lost in moving, also, they sat on a high shelf, and were not played very often, I'd say this one hasn't been played in 20 years, and needs to be gone over and oiled. It is all there, not sure about gum mechanisn. Reel strips are a little faded but very readable. Vtg Antique Old Smokehouse Padlock & Barrel Skeleton Key Treasure Chest Lock Odd
This auction is for a great antique wrought iron lever smokehouse padlock and a hollow barrel skeleton key. It is in overall great shape and the only imperfection is that it is missing the keyhole cover. I know this because of the small round hole above the key hole is where the pin would have gone for the keyhole/dust cover. It still has a great look to it because of the ornamental ornate brass escutcheon around the keyhole. So the missing cover does not detract from the look of the lock.
