Antique Surveyors Field Instrument VERY OLD KUEFFEL& ESSER HAND TRANSIT Brass Construction- Leather Case This interesting. Old surveying instrument, marked K + E for the company Kueffel and Esser, was carried by early-day explorers and surveyors. It enabled them to determine straight level lines and to make quick preliminary estimates of distance and height of far-away objects while working in the field. It is constructed of brass with blued finish and the eyepiece extends for focusing. There are some worn spots of the blued finish. The case is leather and is in good condition except for the belt strap as shown in photo. The optics are clear- the image is split with half showing the object viewed and the other half showing the level bubble. Cleaning of the lenses would improve the optics for modern use.
