Rare WWII Japanese Army Engineers Transit Or Theodolite WW2 Imperial Japan
For sale is a rare WW2 Japanese Army theodolite/transit and carrying case. The transit is in good condition and appears to be fully functional. The optic looks like it could use cleaned but doesn't have any scratches& still retains the original lens cap. Some minor knicks and scratches can be found on some of the paint though. The carrying case has some white paint across the front. And has one of the front latches un-attached. The latch is attached by string to the strap in the back and just needs to be re-attached. Also a piece of the bottom wood that holds the transit in the case has chipped off. The piece is still in the bottom and could easily be re-attached if desired. I'm selling the transit as is. I bought it at an auction and the batteries are not good anymore so I have not tested it properly. I did hook a car battery up to see if it powers up and it does that is as far as it has been tested. It does the power up and goes from 0000000. 11111111, 2222222, 33333333 etcetera all the way through 99999999 that is all I tested except the lights also work. It may need serviced I'm not sure. ANTIQUE SURVEYORS THEODOLITE BY STANLEY, LONDON - VICTORIAN SIGHTING TELESCOPE
Please see the pictures below the description You are bidding on an antique surveyors theodolite or sighting telescope which dates from the late 1800s. I do not know much about the history of this. Except that it came from a large tin mining area here in Cornwall, and could well have been used in the tin mining industry. It is made of blackened brass, carries the serial number 7252, and was made by Stanley, of Great Turnstile, Holborn, WC(also at London Bridge Railway Terminus, SE) of which all is inscribed on the body of the telescope. Optically it seems excellent, with its original graticule in the form of one horizontal and two vertical cross hairs. It is very powerful and the inverted image can be focussed well, being clear and crisp. The focussing is by the brass knob on the side- the object end of the telescope has a sliding hood and ... morea swing cover. There is a large compass under the telescope- this works and can be locked with a turnscrew on the side for transit. It however, is very dirty inside and has some corrosion spots, so needs taking apart and cleaning, a job I am unable to do. There are two levels on the top of the telescope- the long one has a crack in the glass and has lost its liquid- the smaller one at right angles to it is low on liquid. Apart from the points mentioned, it does not have any damage, and the blackened finish is quite good for its age. The exposed brass parts are laquered. I have made no attempt at all to clean any part of it- there is some accumulated dust and dirt in the corners from years of storage. It measures approximately 14.1/4" long when closed and weighs just over 2.1/2 kg. This is a nice, early instrument that is worthy of some work on it, although it does display remarkably well as it is. Please read carefully. And examine pics to determine the condition of this item. It is in good overall condition, but there are a few specific, minor items listed below to make it complete. Feel free to ask any questions. This is a heavy duty metal tripod. I am not exactly sure of the original use, so I have included a close up of the mounting head with the hole pattern to assist with identification. It looks to be for either a theodolite/survey transit, or rangefinding equipment or possible anti-aircraft machine gun, but I am more inclined to think it is for optical equipment more than weaponry. It is very strong and designed to support some fairly heavy equipment. The large mounting head would be easy to custom make an adapter for almost any application. It is a WW2 piece that came from a German Military collection and is does show its ... moreage with oxidizing. A wire brush, some paint and a few squirts of WD40 and this would clean up pretty nicely. All the joints work and the legs extend to nearly 48" total height, but it will need to replace the 3 nuts and bolts on the legs to be able to lock the legs open.
