In Good Condition and Working Order This lovely English vernier theodolite was made by prestigious surveying and drawing instruments brand Stanley. Located in London. It dates from the 1930s and is a highly remarkable piece because of its strikingly good condition and working order. The theodolite keeps all its original components, fully operational, and preserves also the black enamel that covers the metal frame. The polished brass pieces are also functional and in good condition. The instrument bears the engraved serial number 56095 over the inscription MADE IN ENGLAND. It comes in its original case with mahogany wooden box and plywood lid with mahogany finish. The case keeps the lock and the key designed to lock the box. Very attractive and with its original case, is a rare piece that was made in Zaragoza(Spain) circa 1910 by the company that founded Amado Laguna de Rins. This precision instrument works perfectly and is in good condition. The original case where the item can be stored is made of solid wood and is also well preserved, and is responsible in great part of the good condition the article is in. The case preserves the original iron hinges, handle and shutting hooks, and is the perfect complement for the striking theodolite. Laguna de Rins S.A. was a company founded by Amado Laguna de Rins in Zaragoza. In 1880. The factory made precision topographic material. In 1915 the company, entirely financed with Aragonese ... morefunds, had already seventy five employees. During the Spanish Civil War, Laguna de Rins focused its production to manufacture war material and weapons that they sold to Franco’s army. In those times more than 600 employees worked in the factory. In 1962 the firm became a public limited company and started making pieces for cars and telephones, in order to supply several Spanish and foreign companies. In 1981 the firm suffered strong economic difficulties that ended with a downsizing plan. The theodolite that we can see in these images is a precision instrument made by the company during its first years of production. We can see its name in the metal plate screwed to the inside face of the case’s door. And also in the compass’s face, where it is accompanied by the serial number 1161 and the city’s name, Zaragoza. The theodolite is in very good condition and its black enamel only shows some signs of wear. I picked this up at a house sale because it looked interesting. I know absolutely nothing about surveying instruments so if I make an error or fail to describe or mention something please email and I'll do my best correct it. This is a 19th century theodolite in as found condition. I believe the name on the dial is F. Eckel New York. There are two broken pieces of glass. One covers a scale and the other is the leveling bubble. Check out the photos to see. The compass dial measures 4 3/4 inches and has scratches in the center of the glass. The tube length is 10 1/2 inches. The brass dial is 4 1/2 inches. The height is about 15 1/2 inches. It weighs in at 20 pounds. I don't know if there any missing parts. Email for additional photos. Both Face I& II displays are flawless, all keys work well, tangents& focus drive operate very well. The GEB 68 two pin NiCd battery has new cells and NO cracks in the black case cover. Both GKL 12 charger leads have 17.5+ volts. I am offering for your consideration a seldom encountered theodolite axis transit by W& L.E Gurley of Troy N.Y. Gurley describes the theodolite axis transit as follows; In place of the telescope represented in our engraving. We sometimes make one resembling the Y axis of the English theodolite. This modification is desirable, in cases where this instrument is intended to subserve the purpose of both level and transit. In such arrangement. The telescope is confined in the axis with clips, by loosening which, it may be revolved in the wyes, or taken out and reversed end for end, precisely like that of the leveling instrument. When I received this instrument it was dirty and the oil on the spindles was hardened. I took it apart and cleaned and lubricated all bearing surfaces. It now moves through all motions perfectly. I found on the inside ... moreplate the name AS Stephens and the date 1876. See Photo) Seneca A. Stephens worked for Gurley from 1851– 1900+. This is an engineer’s size instrument having a very large vertical circle. Measuring a full 6 inches in diameter. I have not encountered a circle this large before, it may have been a special order. This vertical circle has a reading vernier that lays against the circle graduations when reading it, I have seen this on K&E instruments before but not on a Gurley. The instrument has a Gradienter on it as well. The theodolite axis transit is encountered much less frequently than a solar instrument. The lid of the box has some spits in the wood; the leather strap is a replacement. The original key is present as well as the plumb bob. Rare WWII German Military Balloon Theodolite marked cln 41 9847 underneath a red number 6. cln is the German manufacturing war code for E. Sprenger Optische-Mechanische Werkstätten Berlin. 41 is the year it was built. 9847 is the serial number. This theodolite was purchased at auction in Germany 10 years ago. It was used by the military to determine wind speed and weather conditions by observing and timing balloon movement. It has a large range of adjustable focus. Large numbers can be read from the front or the back of the instrument. 40mm objective lens. 7.5 power. 2 gun sights. Very smooth movement. All adjustments working. No visible scratches on lens. No visible damage to prism. Crosshair is clean and intact. Sharp bright inverted view. Light bulb is intact but has not been tested. Approx. 14" high. Approx. 13" wide. WW1 Military Brass Theodolite, T.Cooke & Sons, Ordnance Arrow
This is a T.Cooke& Sons brass theodolite that bears military ordnance markings. It must predate 1922 as the firm merged with another then to form Cooke. Troughton& Simms. The instrument is in two sections as shown, with the lens section being held to the base by means of two clips. The base has three adjustable feet, presumably to level the piece. This base has what appears to be a spirit level attached but it looks like no fluid in it. The upper section also has a spirit level, but that one is missing the glass so definitely has no fluid. The top is a compass that has only a few degrees to work within. The lens section measures 26cm long, and being solid brass it is quite heavy(base alone is almost 3kg) Condition is as shown, pretty good with the obvious fluid losses.
