You are bidding on one antique Gurley Precision Instruments Transit Survey in its original wooden box with the original tripod. Not being in this line of work. I can't tell you if this is operational or not because I don't know what it's supposed to do. It's been kept in the box so it is in good shape. I believe it's from the 40's/50's from what I've been told but I'm sure the collector will know. It is Catalog number 132-20 which, from the research I did, looks like this piece was used a lot in forestry and military applications. The serial number on this piece is 600445. Plumb bob, shade, brush, hood, glass lenses and all the other extras you see. Transit is number P5085C. And serial number is 161700. This model is from the late 1950s. The box has the same serial number as the unit. This is a large and heavy transit. Measures almost 14.5 inches tall(out of box. Still on plate) A very nice unit, barely any scratches on the textured black finish(only scratches I really see are on the lens cap) When you look through the scope, the view is crystal clear and the hairline grid is all there. The focus wheel works as it should. The box has wear and scratching on the outside as well as some small holes. But it's pretty standard for the wooden boxes to look this way. This is a Survey Transit Level made by David White/Path Instruments. The model is a S-207W and i believe it has an auto level. This was used by my grandpa in his surveying business and has een in storage for the last many years. It looks to be in great ahspe and the lenses are clean, i am sure it still works or he wouldnt have kept it(i don't really know how to use it) It has the number 2R248 on it and the case still has the original stickers on it too. It has a QC"PASSED" sticker on it from when my grandpa kept it certified. It comes with the lens cap, tool kit, and even some of the factory papers from when it was new. However the glass looks to be in good condition. When you look through the eyepiece you can see what the transit is aimed at however I can not figure out how to focus the device to see clearly. The texture coating on the transit has worn off in many areas. He was an engineer his entire life and after serving as a Seabee in the South Pacific during WWII. He worked on major projects in South America and Saudi Arabia in the 1950s. We found two compasses, which are listed separately. This compass is a Keuffel& Esser#1552 in original wood case. The case is in good shape and locks fine. The wood shows normal wear. But is not cracked. The compass does work and has no broken glass. The flaw to this compass is the discoloration of the face of the compass and we have no idea if this can be cleaned or not. Well, This one was made in 1897. This 1897 Vintage is called"Early Twister Leg Style.they started making this style around 1895 up to about 1913(this style was said to be stronger than the straight legs) This survey transit is serial number#3291. And it still has the hard to find"Sun Shade" on the lens end! The total length from tip to tip is about 10 inches. Without the sun shade.and the total length of the red reading needle is about 4 1/4 inches long, in the 4 3/4 inch diameter window. Included is the newer metal tripod base. Antique Industrial Machine Age Transit Level Survey Wood Tripod Stand
This is an antique industrial machine age transit level survey wood tripod stand. I'm not sure as to its age. But it looks fairly early. Folded up. The entire piece measures 47 inches long. Each of the tapered legs measures 45 1/2 inches long. The tapered legs vary from 3/4 of an inch to 1 1/8 inches. The brass piece on top is 3 inches in diameter. The brass piece sticking up is 1 1/4 inches high. The legs can be adjusted in or out(but not shortened or lengthened) and the screws on them hold well. The bottom pointed metal attachments are rusty. But strong and intact. The brass hardware on top has tarnished. One of the legs has about 75% of its finish intact. The other two about 25% This leaves the wood in varying shades of brown, due to wear. Personally, I think he gives it a great old look. But it could use a good polishing. There is ... morean age crack at the top of one of the legs which goes around from the front to the back(please see photo) But it doesn't affect the sturdiness of the piece at all. This lot of survey transit parts are still in the original box they were shipped in from W. L. E. Gurley Company in Troy. New York. Parts were shipped to the Chief Engineer. c/o Seaboard Air Line Railway, Norfolk, VA. The four brass pieces look to be levelers of some sort. I have no idea what the pins or rods are for. There are 4 sets of pins but only 3 leather sleeves to hold them. Lot also contains a metal tube with 3 slits at one end. Payment is due within 3 days of auction end. This was purchased by my Uncle whom was an Electrical Engineer for Weston Newark NJ for many years. I believe he purchased the Survey in the early 50’s or maybe earlier. I was told he had the Survey displayed in his office and was in working condition until he died a few years ago. It has not been used since then. In my opinion. This is an exceptional work of art it is large and heavy. It is in great condition with some minor scratches on the black textured finish and base. Based in Milan, for the construction of optical instruments and measurement, especially for topographical and geodetic use. These Filotecnica transformed into a competitive, even expanding the productive sectors. Minor surface wear and tiny dust particles inside the lens that would not affect performance. This piece is antique but only shows little signs of wear from use and storage over the years. All the knobs and dials work very smoothly as intended. The lens are clear and clean without fungus inside, no scratch or whatever and the focusing of the scope is smooth and precise. This precision instrument was manufactured in the mid to late 1800's and is stored in its original wooden box. This transit is constructed of solid brass and cast iron and is surprisingly heavy. It is in excellent condition and does not exhibit any damage at all, with minor patina associated with age. The glass level is intact and filled with its original liquid. The glass lenses are clear and the line of sight is exceptional. All of the adjustment knobs turn with ease as well. It comes in its original wooden case constructed with dovetailed corners and with its original leather strap intact. The wooden box does exhibit some light wear associated with age. The original Storage/shipping crate is in good shape considering the age of this item, There is"staining" to soft cloth pillow lining. May clean up ok, however we are leaving this up to buyer. As for the T1A- E theodolite surveying transit. Excellent shape There are a few chips to the paint on the body. All knobs and functions seem to work smoothly. Lenses are flawless. Crystal clear.
