This instrument was purchase at an Estate Sale in Lexington KY. It had been owned by a Major in the US Army. He served in the Pacific during WW II. This guy was meticulous and had a lot of nice things. I am not an expert about these instruments. Look at the pics. If you need more pictures. Send us a note. Everything on this piece that is supposed to twist and move, does. You can see thru the eyepiece and focus it. From looking at pictures and reading some of the material available on the internet, it appears that this transit was manufactured in the 1870s, but I am not positive. For your consideration I have a Berger Transit Tripod. This Tripod was made by The Division of Chicago Steel Tape Co. It features a three leg stand. It also features a black latch on each side for adjusting the tripod up and down for your conscience. The tips of the legs are made of a durable metal and are slightly curved to stake into the ground. There is a black strap to allow you to transport the tripod easily. N.Y. circa the middle to late 1800's, as seen in the pictures/ as described in the title. Manufacturer's markings found atop the tripod attachment piece(see pics) NO serial number found at base and level positioned below the scope(indicating a pre-1900's model) From my research, I am confident that this is a very early(possibly 1st or 2nd, ever) model dating as far back as 1860. Picked up locally at an estate auction. Bottom half of a transit or theodolite possibly. All brass. I've taken apart and cleaned up/done some polishing and reassembled. Once I got it apart. The top section splits in half and on the bottom place it has hand inscribed, HJ Rowe Montreal Aug 1887" I haven't been able to find a makers mark anywhere else. Not sure what companies were building these in Montreal in 1887. Real nice piece, needle still moves as well as locks in place. Level on side does not have glass in it. Good for display, parts or completing a piece. Will ship in USPS Medium flat rate box.

Come with its red carrying case that snaps onto the base of it. The instrument is in good vintage condition and the carrying case is solid. The handle is holding fast. Serial number is 106228. This tool was obviously used. Like I said it is in good vintage condition but there are some indicators of its age. The case especially is worn with a lot of the paint scraped off and some oxidation on the metal fixtures. The tool itself has some surface wear and slight oxidation here and there. Along with some extra items shown in photos.The transit has some wear and a few scuffs, the knobs turn and it seems to be able to adjust the focus to a good image. Unit is in very good used condition. It states on one side" Wild Heerbrugg Switzerland T1A- 122086" The focus is fine and clear. Although. I'm not an expert I checked everything and it looks to be in great condition. There are 2 small items( 2nd to last picture) that look to be a extra screw cap and some sort of small lens. The bullet case has no dents. I believe it needs to be calibrated, as the last time this was done was in 1984 by Ridgeway Co.
