Vintage Knife Switch, Electric Chair Control, Steam Punk, Frankenstein Prop, K1
This lot offers offers a very old electrical switch that looks like it came from the electric chair for death row! It is more likely that it came from a factory long ago. I cannot find a date or a maker's name. The only markings are"K1. The switch has a nice snap to it. The spring is still nice and strong. When the lever is pulled three blades snap into position. The blades do not slide all the way into their receivers but I think if the ends were cleaned a bit and lubricated they would. The switch is attached to a pad that measures 7 1/2 x 5 inches and is 3/4 inches thick. I believe the pad is made of a ceramic material. The unit weighs 3 lb 4 oz by itself. Large. Heavy duty knife switch. I am selling it the way I bought it. As you can see from picture it doesn't engage when moved to one side. I modified it(put the"forks" on wood blocks and moved them closer to lever) so the lever would engage in either direction. ANTIQUE W.S. HILL "KNIFE" or "FRANKENSTEIN" SWITCH 220V/200A COPPER & SLATE
Up for bidding is this nice industrial knife switch from a large factory building complex here in Buffalo. Which was started in 1897 and was completed in 1904. It is 220V/200A.It is minimum 110 years old. I cleaned and polished it up when I pulled it out of the building years ago, and had it hanging in my den for years. Now it's time to pass it on to someone else. The backing is slate, the contacts are copper, the handle is wood and phenolic. It still has the fusible links intact. It is BIG and it is HEAVY. It measures about 17" from handle tip to end of base, about 7" wide, and about 4" deep. It weighs close to 13 lbs. Please contact me with any questions you may have. Or for more detailed pictures. Vintage copper FA Knife Switch c. 1920 250V 200A w Unusual tag macabre tale READ
Very large and unique 200 amp knife switch with 1917 and 1919 patent dates. The switch and mounting plate weight 6 pounds. The arms and contacts appear to be solid copper, the switch handle is wood, the base is a nonferrous material that I'm not familiar with. On the base of the switch is a brass plaque which reads: THIS IS THE SWITCH USED TO ELECTROCUTE UNCLE JOE MAYER AND HIS WIFE ABIGAIL" I have researched this and I find no instances of a couple using this name being electrocuted in our federal penal system. Whether this switch was part of an accidental electrocution, from another English speaking country, or whether it's a stage prop I have no idea. The switch appears in good shape, the base has an old split and is held in place by the tag. Appears to be close to 100 years old.
