I have seen my share of tabletop letterpresses. But this thing beats them all! It is so clean and so smooth, I question if it was ever even used. NO ink smudges, NO gouges of ANY kind on the ink table, the previous owner must have loved this baby. These pictures are from the press being taken directly out of my car. nothing touched AT ALL! PLEASE READ. It comes with 3 chases. And 7 SEVEN perfect trays of type. Yup, 7! They all have the cut portions of the type packaging so you can tell what is in the trays. Trays are Incredible, again, NO INK, nothing, all type is super clean and shiny. It does NOT have any rollers, I looked everywhere at the house I got it at, but I am guessing they got thrown out by mistake, I can't see how he could have such an amazing machine and not keep his rollers in equally perfect shape. This Ellison stencil cutter is in excellent working condition but does show normal wear. The lettering on the name plate under the handle is worn and it appears that a piece of rubber for the handle rest is missing. It comes with 30 blocks; 26 two-inch letters of the English alphabet. One four inch capital S, four-inch circle, a three and seven eigths by five-inch rectangle having a three by two-inch oval cut out in the center for masking photos for a 4 x 5 inch picture frame, and lastly a two-inch question mark. The blocks are constructerd of wood and foam in which the steel cutters are imbedded. The blocks are all in excellent condition but do show signs of usage. This is an original Chandler& Price Pilot Press upper feed board bracket& feed board. This is the complete bracket with upper and lower parts and an original wooden upper feed table. It mounts directly to the underside of the lower feed board. If you don't have enough room for feeding on your C&P Pilot you might enjoy having a bit more surface area. The bracket assembly is in excellent original condition. But the board is a bit rough. You can either use it as-is or use it as a pattern to make a new one to match the wood on your press. Ebay-1(2) Golding Official Model 6 Printing Press( pre 1923) This complete inking press has an inside chase dimension of 8-1/4 x 12-1/2” It has its 2 tympan clamps present and movable. Right and left hand gripper fingers present and functioning as well as upper and lower roller hooks with springs. Working. The ink disc rotates slightly on each impression. The roller wheels are present and free on the shafts supplied. The rollers supplied are not inking rollers but foil pulling rollers as the original rollers were completely dried out and crumbling, and I thought it would be better to supply something that may work rather than have them missing. Included will be one shaft that is original from the ink rollers that were trashed, for copying if need be. The roller wheels are correct and turn freely, they are 1-3/8” diameter and according to ... morea copy of a direction sheet that will be supplied the ink rollers themselves should be no more the 1/16” smaller than the roller wheels, the rollers I have supplied are 1/8” smaller but as I said. This press would make a great addition to your collection or to start your own inking projects. However, I'll keep it and work out the home-front issues that are created if it doesn't sell this time. It is an excellent item, with much of what you need to get started out of the box. I'll even throw in a tube of Kelsey black ink. I've ... morenot tried it, but I have had the tube open and it flows well. Should work. Give this serious consideration. This Kelsey press looked rough when I got it. But I knew it could be cleaned up and put back in operation. I stripped it and cleaned off all the rust, primed it with a high grade primer, and top-coated it in cobalt blue metallic paint from Rustoleum. These are all orginal parts. They do not show wear that will affect performance. The lettering is highlighted in silver. The ends of the steel rods are bright and shiny. The j-hooks cleaned up nicely. The springs are good, and the rollers and trucks move smoothly over the chase bed rails. It has been fully lubricated and operates smoothly. Mounted to a nice hardwood board before shipping! The ink disk does have some pitting. But I inked it up andthe new rollers printed the page you see. The platen is in excellent adjustment, and the type"kisses" the paper to leave a clean impression. You could add a bit more packing to make for a firmer impression. I've inserted into the platen a heavy card stock base. Topped with 3 sheets of packing paper and a generic paper tympan sheet. Antique Letterpress Printer's Type Planer, Planing Blocks Leather Pads 6" + Mini
2 Antique Wooden Letterpress Printer's Type Planers. A/k/a Planing Blocks Both have leather pads on top. One measures 6" long by 2 1/8" wide by 1 1/2" high. Another is a"mini" and it measures almost 3" long by 1 5/8" wide by 1 1/2" high. Both are most likely made from hard Maple. A friend of mine is the owner of a Press Museum Print Shop and he explained to me what these blocks are. How they are used, and that both are very old"antiques" This is what he told me.the planers were/are used to used to level the type before printing. The block is laid on top of a type set form and tapped(on the leather pad) to make sure that the letters are pushed down and are all level before the form goes into the press The leather pads on top are to protect the wood from being split or otherwise worn as ... morethe block is tapped repeatedly on the top- for many years, in this case. You can see the black ink and scratches on the bottom. This is the result of being tapped gently(many, many times over many years) onto a form of type. What you have there are a standard size and a"mini" size. Both are quite usable as they are- although I would re-surface them on my belt sander before I actually used them. They are bona-fide antique. Could easily be 100 years old. The planers have age and use wear. Marks, dings, soiling to be expected of items estimated to be 100 or more years old. Leather hard, worn not soft. They are being sold"as is" as was found. Interesting items to use as explained above by my friend or to add to your letterpress printing collection to display. We used it for several years before taking it out of operation(replaced with a newer press) Wooden"feed boards" have been refinished. New die cut plate(from Bar-Plate) was installed and has been lightly used. Currently set up for.918, but by backing bolts out, 937 die could be used. The motor is 3 phase, controlled by a Teco electronic controller. This controller lets you set the speed of the press very efficiently. The press was working when removed from service. It is approx. the same vintage as the larger Ostrander Seymour press, so it is a fair comparison. Both of these presses were made in the 20th century. This press was one of the last of it's kind. Built by any manufacturer. When they Cast into the top of the Press. HEAVY DUTY" they meant it! It has Unbelievably Massive Webbing on Both the Platen and the Bed. By doing some Research. I have found that this press was manufactured some where in the area of 1920 to 1923. or thereabouts. The#2 model weighs in at 2,200 Lbs. and is 78" Tall. When this press ... morewas built it was at the pinnacle of this style of design. This press has the Very Rare. Optional Auxiliary Yoke, to stabilize the Vertical Movement when put on Impression. This will Ensure that Slurs and Unwanted Sideways Movement is either Eliminated or kept to an absolute Minimum. The Impression Arm with the Large Wood Handle is Much Longer than the older models to Provide for More Leverage with less Effort for the Pressman. If you are Printing Large. This is a Wesel Mfg. Co. N.Y. Washington Style, Hand Printer's Proof Press. This press would be a beautiful addition to a small studio print shop. The Wesel Co. was in business from 1900- 1923. The platen size is 13 3/4 x 18. By doing some Research. I have found that this press was manufactured some where in the area of 1905 or thereabouts. It weighs in at approx. 900 Lbs. And is 63" Tall. The factory scribed two lines that find the dead center of the bed. For layout purposes. I have checked the bed and it has a slight low spot in the center area of.001 to.002. Which if OK, and normal. This press has an old paint job using a very good quality of primer and paint that could have been done 30 year's ago or so. All I did is wipe it down with a 50/50 mix of mineral spirits and new engine oil. I have not disassembled and/ or reassembled ... morethis press. Other than the figure 4 toggle mechanism and the platen adjustment. I did however paint on the gold leaf lettering and the large nuts on the top of the press. I have left the beautiful patina on the figure 4 toggle mechanism and also on the inner brass ring on the large wood handle. The outer rounded nut on the end of the handle was cleaned and then clear coated by some previous owner. I have also left the layers of ink that has built up over the years on the wood handle. I feel if the buyer want's to emery cloth. Sand and polish these in the future that is their option. T here is no Tympan or Frisket with this press. If this is a problem for you call me Before Bidding. I have made them before with good results. But we will need to talk about the details first. This is local pick-up only item. No shipping. In my Opinion This is a Samuel Rust. N.Y. Printing Press. This would be the 1st True Washington Press. Made by it's Inventor, Samuel Rust, Approximately 180 Years Ago. THIS PRESS IS AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY. The Platen Size is 23" x 36 1/4" This Press Was Built for Newspaper Printing. Cast into the Top of the Press is a Stylized Eagle. It's Very Hard to Make Out in my Pictures. Below the Eagle is a Wreath with What Look Like Berries. Surrounding Where the Brass Name Plate Once Was. On Each side are Floral Medallions. Also Note the Cross Hatched Diamond Pattern all Around the Press. All of these Characteristics are typical of a Rust press. Unfortunately the Brass Nameplate has been Pried Out& Removed. Many Years Ago. P erhaps for Brass Shortages During the War Time Years. Which in this Case Could ... moreHave Included The Civil War! I had Heard Rumors of a Press Similar to This One on the East Coast with the Nameplate Still in the Press. Rust's Figure 4 Toggle was an improvement in that it Provided Greater Leverage in the Application of Power. Please Note that in Viewing the Close-up Picture of the Rear of the Press. You Will Clearly See the Large- 4- That the Toggle is Named For. 2. Strong. Wrought Iron Bars running through the Weaker, Hollow, Cast Iron Frames, April 17, 1829. The Newly Patented Frame Eliminated the One Piece Heavy Cast Iron Casting. His Patent Replaced it with 2 Much Smaller Cast Iron Pieces. 1 Top and 1 Bottom, with 2 Much Stronger, Wrought Iron Vertical Rods, that were Enclosed in 2 Light Weight.
