Vintgage PAPER BASIS WEIGHT SCALE Louis Schoppe - Leipzig Germany
Unique item from a bygone era. Still perfectly functional. I have had it for over 40 years and it looked just like this when it was given to me by my employer as a farewell gift. Not going to describe what it does if your interested you will know. Cleaning out the closets. Clearly marked made by Louis Schoppe. Leipzig, Germany. No dates marked but does have a serial number. My guess is from 1920-1940. In decent shape, case is leather bound box and there are two templates. I assume one is for text and the other is for cover weights. It is also marked for distribution in the USA as Europe then and now measure basis weights differently. It has a bit of a funky patina which I am confident would clean up but its value is as a collectible so I choose to leave it alone. You will not be disappointed!

Considered the"Bible of Letterpress Printing" This book has numerous examples of different typefaces, oodles of printing equipment, large cabinets for type storage, and a short but interesting section on bookbinding equipment, including presses, stitchers, and paper cutters. 10.25" high 7" wide 3" thick. Over 1100 pages. Text is complete; the book weighs just shy of 8 lbs. Condition: Fair. The cloth is heavily worn around the edges. The rear hinge is weak, and the last gathering is beginning to come loose from the stitching. The spine is also rather faded. The interior has a few spots of grubbiness, fair proof that this was the well-loved copy of an earlier printer. An uncommon& costly book!

It is a comprehensive catalog of typestyles. Dedicated to the Typographic Art. This is a hardcover book. In some state of disrepair. It is complete. Pages 31-34 are loose. Pg. 397-400 are also loose. There is some light soiling and some yellowing from age. Some of the fold out sections show some creases and wrinkling and as you can see from the photos, the spine cover has damage. One of these publications(the dark green one on the left) Is the actual"Instruction Book for the Operation and Maintenance of the V-50 Miehle Vertical" letterpress. The other is a slick brochure promoting the press. Which was touted as the"most widely-used press in the world" The instruction book is in extremely fine condition. With no rips, holes, loose binding, stains, soiling, dog-ears or other marring. The serial number of the Miehle press is written in pencil almost invisibly on the front cover, and again on the flyleaf. The brochure is loose in its stapled binding. And has a tiny rip on the lower right corner of the front cover. Otherwise, it is in fine condition.
