This auction is for a really cool commemorative brass charger or plate. It weighs about 3 pounds and measures about 13 1/2" across. We've done a lot of research on this charger and we think it is for a group of Red Cross nurses or"Dollies. These were the women who served our fighting men donuts and coffee. Amongst other more formal and medical duties. The charger has the insignias of the Red Cross(in enamel) and the First Cavalry(in both enamel and a patch glued on to the plate) Above the enamel logos is engraved"1st Cavalry Division Korea 1959-60. Below the enamel insignias it says Kate McCurdy"Donut Six. Below that are the names of 40 women in 2 columns of 20 each. It appears mostly original with a new clear head(to show off the tone ring) and a fresh set of strings. It plays comfortably up the neck. The neck angle is healthy and the scale length is 26 7/8" There is the normal wear, tarnish, and finish blemishes for an instrument that is almost 100 years old(see pics) but it is structurally sound and in great working/playing order. Two of the tension screws don't match the rest of them, but they look period correct. The hardshell case seems a little oversized and doesn't match perfectly, but is also period correct.
