Spencer Lens Co. introduced this model microscope for advanced laboratory research and clinical work just after the turn of the Century. This instrument features ... morethe characteristic Jughandle limb. Which Spencer named their Handle Arm. This instrument is unsigned and does not bear a typical serial number. However. It is clearly a Spencer Lens Co. instrument. Accompanying this listing is a copy of a catalogue cut showing this model microscope extracted from my personal library copy of their microscope catalogue entitled, Spencer Microscopes and Accessories. Microtomes, Bacteriological Apparatus and Laboratory Supplies published in the year 1914. The similarities to the listed instrument are readily apparent. Dating the instrument is facilitated by a notation found on the barrel of the right fine focus knob on the instrument. PAT. APPD FOR(see close-up image) This notation refers to a US Patent application filed on July 31, 1906 by Harvey N. Ott in behalf of the Spencer Lens Co. Buffalo, NY for a fine adjustment mechanism to be used on Spencer microscopes with the handle arm or Jughandle limb. Ott was ultimately granted US Patent No. 866,383 for his invention on September 17, 1907. I know very little about the world of antique microscopy but I do know this collection is from a round 1900. It does feature some slides that are mounts from The Buf falo College of Pharmacy among other noteworthy slide p reparers. This collect ion came from a estate clean out I did back in November. The mahogany box is lined with red velvet and holds a brass drum microscope with rackwork focussing and a tilting 1.8" diameter concave mirror.There are six objectives in numbered cells, a lens with lieberkuhn, bullseye lens on a pin, stage forceps, tweezers, fluid tray(glass disc with brass trim) hand lens,TWELVE bone sliders. Glass slide, glass phial, brush and rouge box, Also included are round live box and 2 transparent discs and round bone( disc.The stand is provided with an integral spring stage and a pair of holes to carry the included glass phial. Stage is mechanically actuated in X and Y directions by two knurled knobs on right hand side. Under the stage is a projecting sleeve for retaining accessories. Horseshoe base of this biobjective instrument is 4.8" x 4.3" The 3.3" high pillar has a fitting at the front for the 4.8" x 3.5" swivelling plane mirror.The 5.5" x 4.4" stage plate. Incurved at the back, has a 4 inch square glass plate that slides into grooves. It has a handle- type limb 4" long. The limb is removable from the base via a twist-off connection The binocular tubes are adjustable and have a rack and pinion course adjustment. I am guessing that the use for this apparatus was to take pictures of f microscope slides. It obviously was to be bolted to a st aging area and the n looked tho ugh. It is were placed o ver the table o f a microscope. And a light were shone up through a slide under the assembly, it would show a magnified view of the slide in the top eyepiece. Placing a camera over the lens, one could then take pictures of the magnified slide. The complete assembly has a screw on top lens. Over a barrel lens. The item is 3 7/8" tall. The base is 3 1/8" X 3 5/16" The barrel is 1 3/4" in diameter. It is not marked as to maker. There are stamped number on the bottom(56.35 and 26. On the interior top flan g e is the number 55. It is an OLD 19thC FRENCH MICROSCOPE complete with ORIGINAL case. It is nicely engraved NACHET 17. Rue S t Severin Paris and N achet again on one of the tubes.The Company did not move to this address until 1862. I am not an exper t on microscopes but this does look ex tremely well made to me and of a very high quality. The condition is very good too retaining most of the original lacquer that is now a wonderful mellow gold colour. I would give the item 7/10. Even the box is well made although the key is missing( the lock has not been forced)it should be possible to replace this. There are marks and scra tches on this commensurate with age and it could do with a p olish. There are 2 other lens(inside the ... morebox numbered 1& 2 and 2 small caps inside the box. I think there is a small box missing from the covered compartment and also a lens that fits on a small bracket. The mirror s are as per the photos. One looks good but the other side looks to have crazed. It retains what ap ears to be the original green felt base. It adjusts up and down smoothly when the knob is rotated. I am not an expert on this type of thing and your comments would be welcomed and added to the listing. It is VERY heavy at around 4kg UNPACKED. A good brass mounted microscope by J. Swift& Son. London- early 1900s, triple turret with 3 lenses- Swift 2/3 inch, Swift 1/6 inch and Beck 2mm, substage condenser with working iris, good mirror(minor marks on concave side) rack and pinion focussing is good as is the fine focus, good stage and clips. The instrument is generally in good, original condition, some rubbing to the brass in the contact points as would be expected but nothing horrid, the black enamel Crouch type base is in good order. The instrument started life in the Army Veterinary school and has neat engraving to such effect on the base and two of the objectives and their original brass cases. Comes in it's original mahogany fitted case with heavy brass handle on top, the case is in good order, there is a key but the lock needs a little work- a brass catch has been added ... moreto keep the door closed when necessary. A lovely and complete instrument that would be a fantastic display or usable item. May be collected free of charge from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire or sent by insured overnight courier(UK mainland) which will cost £14.50.
