A non-locking Thule M8 nut is about $2-4, or with lock is about $10 at Thule site. Your local hardware store may have an open M8 nut for a ... morebuck or so if you don't care about lock. I never thought of the missing M8 nut until I was loading bikes so made do with what was at hand! I just used a toggle nut with a washer and little piece of copper pipe for a spacer. Included with package! M8 Lock nut lock needs key but Thule can replace w/ number on lock: N111R. I never had the bike wheel straps but if I can find my little velcro straps I used. I'll pass'em on. I also have used U-bolts with flat plate and wing nuts. I may have a couple of sets if you want'em. Bikes are secure without wheel straps.
