Slit Log Drums - 3 carved red hardwood logs vintage collector Frank's Drum rare
3) Hardwood hand carved Slit Log Drums. I estimate these date from the 1940s or 50s. They were part of the Frank's Drum Shop/Chicago percussion instrument rental collection that I acquired in 1985. Whoever made these made them the right way- with resonance holes cut into each end(see photos) It is not as easy as one might think to make logs sound good as playable musical instruments. The sound is as you might imagine- very high pitched and very meaty at the same time. 2 sound characteristics that that do not usually come in the same package. If you think"Claves" minus the extremely sharp sound, and with 200% more body- that is what these sound like. It is not a delicate sound with all kind of nuance possibilities- these logs are made to be hit with conviction and their voice is a blend of 60% impact and 40% tone, in other words- ... moreauthentic. They sound great played with heavy hard rubber xylophone mallets, and they sound good played with the butt ends of plain old drumsticks(heavy like 2Bs) Weight and Mass is important in getting these logs to resonante properly as afterall, they are quite massive. The PITCHES are- roughly- G,A, D- each side of the log has slightly different pitch. As with everything else from this collection"Frank Drum Shop" is written in marker on the logs. It is fading in to the wood after all these years, and visible from up close. The sizes: 13.5" 12.75" and 10.5" in length and they are made of Rosewood or similar hardwood.

The LOG CAR Jim Beam Bourbon Decanter. Regal China, empty The LOG CAR was one in a series of finely detailed-antique railroad decanters. The LOG CAR bottle represented the type of rail car adapted for use in the mountain ranges in the late 1800s and on into the early 1900s as well. Contained 80 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Empty now. Plastic and Regal China. Dated 1984. About 11 inches long. 6 inches high, and 5.5 inches wide, in the original box. Check my other sales for others in the Jim Beam series of railroad decanters. Other than dust from being on a display shelf. This one appears to be in perfect condition, nothing broken. Nice addition to your collection. Or a good start! HISTORY. Jim Beam Bourbon whisky has been distilled since 1795 in Clermont. Kentucky. In order to be labeled bourbon, whiskey must be aged for at least ... moretwo years in charred-oak barrels and at least 51% of the grain used has to be corn. While bourbon can be made anywhere in the United States, only distilleries that are located in Kentucky can include"Kentucky" on their labels. Bourbon does not age once it's bottled, as many wines do, so the flavor of bourbon bottled in 1951 would be the same as bourbon bottled in 2005. In 1952 Jim Beam started a Specialty Bottles line of bourbon. Where the whiskey was sold in nontraditional bottles. Bottles were made in both glass and ceramic. In 1955 the Beam Company and the Regal China Company in Illinois hooked up to produce the now famous Jim Beam ceramic bottles and decanters. Demand was such as the years passed that they created bottles specifically for large companies. They also started issuing a special bottle yearly during the Christmas season.
